i'm pretty sure i contaminated my son's tank with some phyto(nanno). it's a Fowlr w/sand. lg water changes (50%) and lights off for days have no effect. i tried using algaefix at reccomended doseage. after 10 days i didn't seem to be gaining ground. it only has a pair of bangaii's in the tank. any tips on how to crash the culture with chemistry? finding rots is a pita, i'd rather avoid if possible. thanks:headwally:

If you don't have any photosynthic corals or algae your looking to keep alive, a week in total darkness will do the trick. When I say total darkness, I'm talking no lights and wrapping the tank with paper or cardboard to the point of absolutely no light penetration for a good 7 days. This will usually kill of all but the most stubborn algae blooms.

When I had a massive phyto bloom the only thing that worked was to hook up a UV sterilizer, with 2 days the tank was crystal clear.

I over-nighted a UV unit with my phyto bloom then put in new carbon. The carbon cleaned it up before my UV got there the next day. Food for though?

Carbon,Phos will do diddly, you'll waste time and $$$.
You need to either borrow a U.V. or buy one.
Even water changes wont do anything.
Had this happen in a QT tank once while running hypo.
