Have any of you tried using mangrove plants to manage water quality, especially nitrates?

I am curious if they are effective, and whether it is feasible to have them down in the 30g sump.

Thanks.

If you want your mangroves to actually help, you're gonna need A LOT of mangroves. However, it depends on how big your tank is.

+1 on that, also mist the leaves with ro water every once in a while and don't let the leaves fall into the sump evacuee thats where they store all the nasty stuff they pull

I have a 125g FOWRL, and a 30g sump underneath. How do I determine how many mangroves I would need?

Also, do I me special lighting? Right now I have a basic fluorescent light on the sump tank that runs each night.

I don't remember the exact numbers but after I heard a talk by Eric Borneman at a big reef meeting, I came to the conclusion that, while cool, we can never grow enough for it to be effective in our systems.
