The 26th Hawai'i Senate legislature has started off 2012 with SIXTEEN new measures seeking the regulation or total ban of the aquarium trade.http://www.advancedaquarist.com/blog/5-new-hawaii-senate-measures-introduced-seeking-ban-and-regulation-on-aquarium-trade

Hawaii isn't the only place to Get Yellow Tangs from.

I recognize that. Sorry for the "sensationalized" thread title. It's just yellow tangs are the de facto face of Hawaiian aquarium fisheries.

Can yellow tangs be bread in captivity?

Off the coast of Florida, Johnstone Islands, marshal Islands, wake Islands, caroline islands, Guam, Hong Kong, they are native to a lot of places.I am not 100% sure on the lagality of getting them from these locations, but there are other locations.

Not yet, but projects like Rising Tide Conservation are actively working on it right now.

They start every year like this.

Not to this extent. I believe there were two sponsored bills in 2011. 2012, there's sixteen and counting.

ORA has attempted to breed Yellow Tangs, but I don't think they're been successful or it's commercially available yet. If they did, I'm sure they'd be ridiculously expensive.

There were bills like this last year too. If I remember correctly the Hawaiian government was against the ban. Hawaii makes good money from "us" and I doubt they want to lose that.

Again, 2011 had a small fraction of sponsored measures compared to what we're already seeing in 2012. 2011 also was the first year resolutions against the aquarium trade were passed at the county-level, setting up the stage for 2012 to be a major "battle" year for the aquarium trade.

The aquarium fishery industry is tiny compared to those lobbying against us (recreational operators, tourism, etc.) ... and those do more damage to reef habitat than our tiny industry ever could. This is our industry's challenge. Even with science on our side, appeal to emotions/fears and the backing of industries larger than ours is a serious threat in 2012.

I dont see these people banning the famring industry or the beer industry, whos run-off probably hurts reefs way more then over fishing for the hobby. Wait 30 years when coral reefs are destroyed and they want to use my frags to repopulate the reefs .... hah
