It appears that someone forgot to pay the domain renewal fee and it was snapped up by a third party. That is just conjecture, but if true, the domain cant be transferred back for 60 days, so it could be a long haul if thats the case... no good. no good at all.

If someone else bought the domain name, you have to wait until they give it up or you have to track them down and buy it from them. I don't know what you mean by "transferred back." There was a domain name that I waited two years for. Now I own it for the next three.
