or at least i think this is pretty rare. i stopped into my LFS today and walked around and stumbled upon these 2 little guys who were kept in a breeders net. when i say little, i mean really little, the larger one in the pictures measured about 1cm and the smaller one was about .75cm. scientific name is Discordipinna griessingeri and the common name is flaming prawn goby.

it took my LFS 3 yrs to find these guys from their suppliers. supposedly, the supplier himself went to great lengths, hiring specific diving teams to go into the indo-pacific to search for these guys. in all of 2 yrs, they managed to capture about 8 of them or so - 2 of them wound up at the LFS. they are selling for $100 each.

for size comparison, this is the 10G tank they were placed in. the breeders net measures roughly 4inches long by 3inches

Yup yup, definitely a rare and awesome goby! Too bad from what I read they're really shy and timid so you won't see much action. $100 is about the right price. Did you end up taking one home?

They're so small I'm afraid my pistol shrimp would eat them!

We have one right now in our 12g, he has been doing well and we have actually seen him several times after we bought him. We had one before that we never saw, good luck with them.

nope... didn't pick them up. but yes mikeandnicole, after reading up on them. they are very shy and tend to hide in rocks. one guy on another forum said he had them for 18months and saw them a total of 5 times. lol.

what is the difficulty of these little guys? their size tells me they're very sensitive and delicate. what do they eat?

I've been looking at these fish for a pico for myself for quite some time. From my research the most common foods seem to be baby brine shrimp & chopped mysis, and I've seen it reported that some will eat the tiny Spectrum pellets as well.

I have been feeding the tank with Rods food due to the small particles of food in there.

I have had one in my 120 for a year. He has never come out of the rocks, but I know where he lives and can steal a glimpse of him every once in a while. Gorgeous fish. While 'd love to see him more often, just knowing he is in there happy and healthy is enough.

Wow, in a 120. That's like knowing a needle is in a stack of hays somewhere!

It is small in relation to the tank, but unlike a needle in a haystack, I can pick him out easily. :D

I do enjoy getting close to my tank with a small flashlight and inspecting all the crevices for the myriad creatures that live in it.
