I just got a sleep goby last week and I've already had to fish him out of my overflow box 3 times. He's only about 1.5-2" long.

Any ideas on hot to prevent him from doing this? He goes in my overflow box and then gets sucked up and put in the back compartment of my HOB overflow box. It's not the easiest thing getting him out because of the size of the box.

Spank him, tell him what a bad goby he is and send him to bed without supper. Thats the only way they learn.

Then I would keep the overflow off for a few days until he gets used to the tank. Its freaking out and hanging near the surface. Or, just run the over flow with the lights on.

I have two yellow clown gobies and the one is fairly small.....it went thru the siphon tube and into the overflow box on back and then all the way down into my 40 gallon sump below.....haha....I scooped him up and put him back in display tank. I was thinking of maybe putting some sort of filter like material where the combs are on the inner overflow box.....haven't done it yet and the fiancé informs me that the little guy is MIA as of tonight.

I had a small clown fish that made it into my overflow twice, with the second time making it all the way down to my filter sock in the sump. I found a few larger openings in my overflow that I closed over. Problem solved.

I put pantyhose over our built-in overflow after my goby jumped in 30 minutes after being put in the tank. You have to have something to clip/hold it down with & just stretch it over the top. Of course, we have a hood with screen on the back, so he can't bounce off onto the floor.

Thanks guys.

I had a yellow clown goby that i found in the overflow and sump a few times. I havne' tseen him in months so I'm guessing he got sucked into a pump or somehting.

I do have a sponge on the overflow box drain line going to my sump so there's no way he can go to my sump. What about simply using a rubberband around the outside of the overfox box to help cover the holes? It wouldn't cover the the holes completely, bu maybe enough to keep the fish from entering.

I had the same problem with my watchman goby. I took some filter sponge material, cut slits and placed over the "teeth" Water goes through, goby stays out.

Go to your local Hobby Lobby and get some plastic needlepoint canvas. you can cut it shape it and tie it wherever you like using zip ties, fishing line etc.

+1 on warpig's suggestion... I siliconed that behind my overflow teeth so nothing could slip thru, then made a cover for my overflow out of black acrylic so nothing can go up over the edge (and it also keeps light out of the overflow so I don't have to worry about algae in there). Since doing that, I have never had a fish go sump surfing or had a snail clog my drain line.
