i'm getting a 60g cube. its 2x2x2 but my stand i want to be 30"long by 27" deep. would i be fine just building it like the normal design from the "diy stand" tutuorial

I plan on putting 2 braces under the tank but worry about the tank sitting on the 2x4's and using the screws as support.

any thoughts appreciated

Not really. You want direct vertical support under the corners of the tank. Screws in shear, do not provide support, that is safe anyway.

yeah that is my main concern with it. I've built stands before for my 125 and 120 and just built them to the size of the tank so wasn't a concern. but since i need this stand to be a little bigger just for sanity sake i have an issue. I do know though that i can just probably build my stand to tank size and add on to the edges possibly, just wont look pretty inside after its skinned haha

You would be surprised how "pretty" you can make a proper stand, with a little creativity, plywood, some trim and a router.

i'm i'm confident of my ability to make it pretty on the outside, haha

I just need the most room underneath as possible for sump, reactors, dosers, and all that junk.

I miss my fish room haha

Look at this tank stand ,you can make it anyway you want [URL="http://www.etakc.com/t87-60-gal-cube-2x2x2-tank http://www.etakc.com/t87-60-gal-cube-2x2x2-tank[/URL]

I'm not sure i would trust that stand honestly....and i need room for a sump/fuge and my reactors and dosers as well as my electrical equipment, and that just wouldn't work I dont think. Thanks for the idea though

You dont have to have vertical supports it just needs to be fully supported. If you can do that without verticals then go for it.

I built my 120 stand over-sized based on Rocket's design

This would be the top and bottom layouts. The vertical supports would be at the intersections of the red and yellow /orange and yellow pieces. You end up with a couple columns in the stand to work around but I really like the extra space it gave me.

Here's a pic of my frame (it's sitting with the back of the stand on the ground)

This pic is the stand finished without the doors (you can see the column inside)

The vertical support is where it needs to be. Perfectly acceptable.

yeah thats basically what i was thinking about doing. just sucks because with a stand my size it takes up so much room in there haha.

I built my stand for my 180 30 inches deep and had no problems, but it was a plywood stand, not 2x4's. I'm building my stand for a new custom 320 and the stand will be 96x36x42h and the tank is 96x32x24. I have no concerns about the strength, but I have always used a 3/4" plywood deck that is glued and screwed down. This should distribute the weight across the stand. I'm not an engineer, but do no suspect that I will have any problems.

yeah i was planning on using a plywood top all the way across as well. and with my tank full of water and rock and stuff is spose to be about 500lbs. I get free 2x4's from my work so i might make a few designs and see what i like haha
