View Full Version : Tank light cycle vs room's brightness?

I am still doing some research before setting up my first tank and am hoping someone might be able to help me understand the lighting needs of an aquarium better. I have some MH lamps right now and plan to end up with LED's eventually.

What I am concerned about is the rooms ambient lighting. I know the day/night cycle is important. My current plan is for the tank to be in the living room and thanks to varying schedules the room is generally occupied 24/7. There would usually be the glow from a TV and a 60 watt light bulb pretty much night and day, it is not very bright but I don't know where the line is. Does anyone know if that would cause problems for the fish/coral and their night cycle? It is hard to get a read on how 'dark' night needs to be so any thoughts would be welcome.

Thanks!

not likely to be a problem.

Should be good. We have six halogen lights on the ceiling and they are on most days - while the tank lights are still off.
Heads up though, I would watch out for red cyano, we had a small outbreak that got bad fast (it was trying to cover coral). I think the lights only helped the cyano. This was in a 14g nano, ran the tank without lights for a few days and dropped a towel over it. That seemed to kill the cyano.
