The ace brand garbage cans that are acctually made by Rubbermaid are they safe to use for water storage? They don't say anything about being NSF approved or anything on them

Brute containers are made thicker with better materials than your average trash can to prevent bursting when completely filled with liquids. Not all cans are designed for that and may burst. I would personally hate to have 45 gallons of water suddenly burst onto the floor of my home, almost as much as my wife would hate it!

you can use rubber maid trash cans. just dont go cheap on them get the "tuff" kind not the flimsy ones.

A long time ago this topic came up and someone mentioned that the cheaper Rubbermaid cans have algicides in them. Not sure if this is true or not, but combine this with the fact that Brute cans have the NSF label and are built stronger, I'd only recommend using Brute cans.

its an agency that tests stuff to determine its safety. you need the nsf stamp to store foods in it for restaurants and stores
