View Full Version : LED's keep flickering, need some advice on what to do!

so i had some DIY leds built for my tank about a year ago and they've pretty much been flickering for the last couple of months. they are dimmable, and usually when i try dimming the whites or the blues, that's when the flickering starts.

someone from the reef forums was kind of enough to come and take a look at my lights and try to help me finally figure out what was wrong, he spent all day and found shorts and corrected them and redid a lot of the wiring as well. however, he pointed out himself that if this doesn't work, he did notice that the soldering was shoddy (unfortunately i trusted the wrong person to do the lights since i didn't know how, although he did try his best).

so the lights were perfect for like 2 weeks and now they're flickering again.

i really love the leds, but i'm sick of this, i'm too afraid to dim them and i'm not enjoying the lights as much as I used to.

so i saw online these solder less connectors, and i was wondering if it's possible to remove the current wiring/soldering and just use these and rewire the leds myself and leave the other wiring alone.

the leds are all cree (although i will double check), i'm just worried about taking the fixture out of the canopy, and possibly messing up any wiring that's been done to the drivers and pots.

i'm sure i've left out a lot of info but this is all i can think of right now. any help will be greatly appreciated, i've spent a lot of money on these led's and would like to get them working how they should be.

here are some pics of them when they were initially being wired and soldered.

thanks!!

Likely an intermittent short and/or LEDs not matched well to drivers (Vf not in the driver's range, or something similar).

It is REALLY hard to diagnose these problems remotely. I'd suggest trying to get someone local to look at the unit. "Upgrading" to solderless connectors would not be a good route IMHO, if you're not experienced enough to correctly solder the LEDs as they are now, it'll be really tough or impossible to get the LEDs "clean" enough to get good connections to those devices.

PS - you'd probably get better help by putting this thread in the DIY forum vs. here - you might want to ask the mods to move it there.

ok thanks, i'll post in that forum. i did have someone local come out to try and figure out what the problem was and he tested each connection, found some shorts and fixed them. however he did mention that the fixtures looked like they hadn't been soldered well and that if fixing the shorts didn't fix the problem, that would mean that everything would probably have to be re-soldered and unfortunately he didn't have time for that. and i'm having difficulty finding somebody willing to come out and help (even paid). thanks for the advice!
