im adding sand to my aquarium, all i have in there is dry rock set up on egg crate, its so hard putting one cup carefully, it will take hours that way, is there an easier way? can i just pour it in on top of the rocks and when i add water it will take care of it?

Just take the bag, cut a hole in it, and pour it in from the bag onto the bottom of the tank. If it's not in a bag, use something bigger than a cup.

Like they said dump it in and no matter how you put it in it will be cloudy when you add the water.

im adding about 150 lbs of sand, its a 120 gallon tank and i have 100 lbs of dry rock for now, planning on adding 25-30 lbs of live rock within the week...
so im just gonna dump it in, it will go on the rock but ill spray it off when im filling her up :-)

When filling the tank, take one of the empty sand bags and lay it flat on top of the sand. Pour your water in on top of the bag so it won't stir up the sand so much. If you're using a pump to pump the water in. Have it so the water is going in slowly on top of the bag. The bag will float up with the water level.

I've done this method twice now with good results. You'll still have some sand storm but not nearly as bad.

Just dump the sand on the glass bottom of the tank. Dump some in, spread it around under and around your rocks, then dump in some more.

Dumping it in all over your rocks to spray it off later is asking for a heck of a storm...

Use a 2 inch pvc pipe and pour sand slowly on the top, just point it all the way to the bottom and where you want to add sand.

this is always an irritating process for me.

Just put the whole bag in the tank. Then slit it with a razor. No sand dumping all over or dust puffing up all over the place.

All normal. The dust/cloudiness will settle as bacteria begin to multiply and make the grains and dust cling together.

bacteria dont need live rock to produce. they jus need A ROCK. meaning just a porus place to hangout at. all water have the bacteria in it in some form and given the right conditions they start to multiply. live rock only help bring an established colony of bacteria in ur tank thus reducing the stress of multiplying of existing bacteria.
what are right conditions for bacteria to grow?
ammonia and nitrites. when ur tank has ammonia bacteria will multiply to convert it to nitrites and then another bacteria will be produced that will convert nitrites to nitrates.
all these colonies of bacteria can only survive in the same proportion of ammonia/nitrite production.
