Standard 29G, barebottom. I have all the components for a 250W SE MH. If I put the bottom of the light 12" above the waterline, is this too much light.

The plan is to propogate BTAs on the minimal rock, zoas on the bottom, breeding pair of bangaiis in the tank.

What bulb is recommended for best growth? Dont care about looks.

Radiums are the best SE in my opinion. I'm not sure if the 250w might be too much, but the thing I would be concerned as well is the heat coming from the light onto that small tank.

for growth look for 10k XM's IMO

the 250 mh will work as long as you can keep heat under control as stated but remember just because you will have more watts don't mean you will ness. get better growth.

I am using a 250 simply because I had all the components. It will be suspended 12" off the water (no canopy) with a 6" fan blowing across the fixture, in a ventilated room. I dont suspect I will have heat issues, but Ive never ran a 250W halide.

I will look for a 10K XM.

10k is some potent light but i think you will do fine with it. With the fan you shouldnt have any heat problems. I run 250hqi 14k plus actinics 10" from water with fan setup too, no heat problems. 29g bio cube. Mixed reef and clams are happy.
