is this sargassum? i've been pulling it and throwing it in my refugium, is this a bad idea? my tanks about 9 weeks old, all i have is the LR and some hemits, and the stuff is growing pretty quick. will it slow down? is there something that will eat it?

That does look like a nice growth of Sargassum. I'd just keep pulling it out as necessary ;) It's also fine to keep it in the refugium. As for fish that might eat it, large tangs such as Naso's and most Rabbitfish would likely chow down on it, along with other macro's ;)

It will slow down. I had it in my tank and I was worried about its growth rate. It will only last 3-6 months and then it will die back. Just keep harvesting it.

You could do a cool little species tank (~20 gal) with that stuff and a Histro histro (a.k.a. Sargassum frogfish).

Hello, I posted this question in the fish only and agressive tank collumn.
I am searching for Sargassum Macroalgea... I just bought a Sargassum Frogfish and I would like to build a Sargassum Sea tank.
I noticed that some of you are harvesting it an trowing it out, could we possible make an agreement to send me a portion of your harvest so I can build my ecology tank?
I am specifically searching for the floating type but I would like to get what is available...
Any info on suppliers and hobbiest shares would be appreciated...
Thanks for any consideration...

Is this what Sargassum looks like up close?

Hey DrBCP,
I believe the algae in the picture you posted is dictyota algae.
