Hey all - I've got more seahorses coming tommorow via live aquaria . One is a dwarf seahorse that is supposedly eating 'ova' very well. I never knew that they accept anything other than live brine , so I pulled the trigger. I've always been happy with all livestock from LA. Does anyone use it and is it available locally in CT? I googled it and appears to be fish eggs- I assume it's frozen..?

Nutramar Ova is probably what you're looking for.

I ordered mine offline since I scoured the state for some and couldn't find em. They did however, help my mandarins take all kinds of other foods

I'm about to setup a dwarf tank. From what I've read some will take to frozen and some won't but the ones that do don't do well long term. I didn't read of anyone feeding ova though. Please let me know how you make out. Do you have any pics of your dwarf tank?

And if its a true dwarf it will not survive in your current tank. you can do 20-30 in a ten gallon tank. i have read stories of people who thought they had them of live food the story always ends bad.

Will do... yeah I never heard of seahorses eating 'Nova' but I believe Liveaquaria and they usually send top notch stuff with a 2 week guarantee. I've turned my 75 gallon into a seahorse tank...I know the size is an issue with food concentrations but I turn off the pumps and spot feed them with a turkey baster into the front corner of the tank...as soon as I kill the pumps they come to the corner lol

Thanks for your optimism mtc...'reading stories' and actual husbandry are two different animals. Flame away.

That's the price for ponies eating live foods though right ?

Trust, I'm skeptical myself. His days are numbered anyhow though , from what I've read they're not long lived and this guy at a length of 1.5" must be a mature adult.

They live about a year to year and a half if memory serves me correctly. Based on everything I've read and everyone's experience that has housed these guys they will not survive in your tank (I hope they do). The requirements for dwarves are a lot different them that of other seahorses. Because. Their size they do not do well with much current (much less than other seahorses) and you have to be carefull with live rock because of hydroids that can kill them. They don't really hunt for food they just hang out until food happens to swim by. And as far as I know no one has been able to train them to eat from a dish. I've read that ORA quit their dwarf project because they couldn't keep them long term on frozen foods. No none of what I'm saying is for personal experience, it's all from research I've done so that I could successfully keep these guys. I'm by no means trying to flame you just try to pass on some info so that you don't loose your money and the seahorse doesn't loose it's life because of improper conditions. I hope it works out for you and if you do decide to get them please post your progress as I'd love to learn from your experience.

Thanks Gar - I forgot all about the hydroids. You guys are right he's probably going to die. I read that he ate frozen, I got excited and bought him ASAP because he was on divers den wysiwyg. Not much I can do now though... He's on a jet coming from Wisconsin as I type.

Don't lose hope before you've already started. I would love to see this be a success!

I wish my tank was ready I'd buy him from you but I just got it in the mail today. Maybe you can put him in an acclimation box with a little bit is sea grass. It might work out until you can figure something else out. And give the frozen a try, you can always supplement with bbs if need be.

If the flow is too much for him, maybe I'll put him in my hob fuge , it's almost 5 gallons and has plenty of cheato to hitch to. I'll give the main tank a shot though , it has some spots with very low flow.

In response to your original question, I did buy this product in CT once.... I THINK I was at Appalachian Tails in Glastonbury. I spent an afternoon touring all of the "northern" LFS's that I don't usually get to visit and one of them had this product..... it was a very rustic-looking store, almost barn-like?

This was about a year ago but it might be worth giving them a call to see if they still have some in their freezer.

If you don't have any luck finding any and you're desperate to get the new arrivals to eat I can give you whatever is left in the package in my freezer. I'm in central CT . . . not sure how far away you are.

Thanks for the offer Sue! FedEx is supposed to come around 3pm. I think I'm going to hit Krystal Clear in the morning and if they don't have it I'm off to Agawam. I have mysis and cyclopeeze and am going to hatch some brine just in case. Thanks :)

H2o Life has frozen cubes called"frozen caviar". It's basically small fish eggs. Not sure if you could use that but I figure I let you know. I get it from fish frenzy in Ludlow MA.
