In the planning phase of a 24 LED light for a 18x18x18 cube. I'm thinking I should hang the light as close to the tank as possible being that there are a few recliners in that room and I'm worried the light will be very annoying to anyone sitting in those chairs. Should I go with 80 lenses or none at all or isn't it that bad?

I run those lens and get about 6" spead off the heatsink size about 14" off water. They would help raise the par and I don't find them as blinding from the side.

what about enclosing them in a hood?

I guess I'd be better w/o lenses but would need to fashion some cover for the light.

I want the top to be open to show off the rimless tank or I'd builda a hood.

I would use the 80 degree lenses and adjust the height of the fixture to get the spread you want. I have them over my 34g solana (just a bit larger than your tank) and first tried it without lenses. After adding the lenses, the light was more focused into the tank.
