Looking for advice on a decent HOB Protien skimmer to replace my Red Sea Prism. I dont have room in my sump to go with an in sump skimmer so im going to need to stick with an HOB.

Im using the Reef Octopus lx1000s on my 46g QT and it does a great job. I would use the lx2000 for your set up. The 1000 is rated for up to 100g and the 2000 is up to 150g. The 2000 also has the pump on the outside which is easier to get to if need be. These skimmers arent cheap but they are excellent for an HOB model.

I will second the Reef Octopus LX1000S or LX2000S. I have the 1000S running on a 65g and this is by far the best HOB skimmer I have ever used. Every week I empty my collection cup and its full of thick dark nastiness.

Thanks for the replies, right now just can not afford close to 400 for the skimmer, tho id love to have it... iv had to boil down some options to these three as they are more or less in my price range... your input will be greatly appriciated.

I have literally purchased, used and still have practically every HOB slimmer and only found one to work consistently.

Deltec MCE 300

Other skimmers would work for a week or even a month but slowly they will degrade. All of my HOB skimmers I purchased new too but the deltec mce300 I actually got it used from here and turns out to be the best skimmer I have used.

dont get the octopus lx1000s. the pump is very hard to remove during servicing. also, the pump was very very loud from the beginning. i called coralvue for support and got none. it is now sitting in storage after 2 months. $300 wasted.
