Hey guys, has anyone tried to make DIY magnetic reef plugs? I was looking at the price of the aqua mags and it's ridiculous... I was thinking of fragging some of my new stuff and trying to grow it on the sides of my pico :)

Recently I got an ORA Birds of Paradise SPS frag and it's growing awesome! Looking for ORA Red Planet if anyone wants to trade :)

I bought plastic coated magnets from these guys and glued frags right to them. The corals have been growing strong since. They are growing on the tank wall, and out from the wall, and one magnet is all I used, I would guess eventually they will break off, but still holding strong for now.

Have you had any problems with rust? I've seen so many posts on reef central about those magnets from KJ rusting and killing everything in the tank :(

I have also heard of people just taking Plastidip and coating magnets themselves. Don't know if they had the rust problem.

No rust problems here, they have been in the tank for well over a year.

Interesting. Doug, can you send me the exact link to the one you're using? :) Hey NotaPiscivore, I sent you a PM about pipe organ coral if you'd like to purchase.

My tank is 3/8 thick and they slam together when applied. The only issue you may encounter is their physical size. I put small frags on them, and grew them out. My Montis that are attached to them are 6" wide, and stick out about 4" from the tank wall. Just to give you an idea of their holding strength.
