View Full Version : New Zoa garden frag setup...lighting?

I set up my 24"x24"x6" Zoa garden tank. I plumbed it into my DT sump. I just put a marineland LED light on it because I had it laying around. My question is: what would be a good light to use for optimal growth of zoas only?

Metal halides (6.500K - 10.000K) with supplemental T5s HO (blue plus), if you wish.

But for your set up, as is, you can have all T5s easy.

Yeah I was thinking MH might be overkill on such a shallow setup.

If you adapt the zoas carefully it would work, but that is definately not necessary for that tank!
I would avoid the heat on that shallow one using HO T5s or use a MH with HO T5s in a deeper tank.
I'm not a LED's fan, yet. I guess others could give their testimonies here about the LEDs too, but...
Well, still, I don't think the LEDs would be the BEST to grow zoas nowadays...
Am I wrong? :hmm5:

On a side note, it doesn't appear that you have support under the full tank. Personally, I would fix that.

I have a steel plate underneath the whole tank that supports the front that hangs over. Is that enough? What can happen? It is very sturdy at this point but will that change over time?

Frag tank looks great, leds would be the best! No overheating, no need to change bulbs, etc

I need to call Jerome Harrison and have him come lay a smackdown on you for abusing that Steelers towel by using it as a drip rag on that Zoa frag tank!

Nice setup, did you have that tank made or was it off the shelf somewhere?

Pakirri, what kind of tank is that in your avatar? It looks cool. Is that your DT or a frag tank?

40oz, ha ha ha Jerome Harrison was a crappy Browns running back! You must be thinking James Harrison, the baddest man in the NFL. And about 5 feet from that towel is a signed autograph of him on a picture of when he bodyslammed the Browns fan that ran in the field about 5 years ago.
On another note, my DT has an old bottle with a Steeler logo on it:

Oh and I got the tank at the LEAR Fragswap in Cleveland last month. A Fragswap is the ONLy reason I would travel to that depressing city. I had a great time, though. I'm just playing, it's an OK city.

Yinzer... thanks for the correction. I knew Typed it wrong the second after I hit post.

Sad to see Hines go, but it was time.
Aaron Smith another good solid player they've sent away
I'm really concerned that Mendenhall Is going to take a year + to recover and likely wont touch a ball this year... put a fork in him, he's done in Steelers eyes.

I would stear clear of the marineland, no good for Zoa's. I would try a pair of par 38 bulbs from ecoexotic or boost, or a diy set up with some 3w cree bulbs. With that shallow of a tank optics would be very flexible! That or t-5's, I wouldn't go MH or PC, too much heat unless you have a chiller laying around as well!
