Just soo cool. Quick question, do you not get crazy out breaks bc of the sunlight? My tank gets hit with sunlight by about 6 windows and I think that attributes to some of my algae. Do you not have an issue?

He is running an algae turf scrubber, so the algae only grows where he wants it to grow.

Not a bad system.

Thanks. No issues with nuisance algae. I keep nutrients in check, and export using macro algae and ATS.

Congrats,you have a wonderful tank.

Thank you Sir, glad I could help showcase us SA Reefers :D There are many epic tanks in SA, including yours!

Your tank is amazing! You have the biggest and coolest ats I have ever seen. Was it hard to set up and get running properly?
Thanks mate! I planned this system to maximise every ounce of space, my only limitation was my neighbours boundary wall. The ATS was really quiet simple, a gradient and lots of of running water is all that is needed.

thanks.

Many congrats Adrain. All credit to your hardwork and tank looks amazing as always. Once again well done.

Use a phosphate media bag in your sump... The sunlight doesn't do as much for alge as 1ppm of phosphates will....

Lower your phosphates and your alge will go away.

but I have 2 quick questions for you...

1. How do you know when it's time to bring in the halides? Par metering? calendar?

2. I guess the halides are for the Display Tank, so.. what light do you use for the ATS?

Actually a drop in water temperature is my main indicator. Winter allows me to use the MH's to also give heat to the sun room. I don't run heaters in the tank other than in winter, so I know when it's cold, to start getting ready to put up the unit.
The ATS only uses sun all year round, there is enough ambient light and the travell of the sun in winter hits the ATS for most of the day still.

Stunning! I can only hope my tank looks that nice one day!
Why thank you!

Well done maneer! always an inspiration.

Thank you!. Hehe, if I lived your side of the world I'd be fly fishing for tarpon on the Florida keys, everyday. Never mind the tank.

Thank you, actually in the last 5 years or so I've probably bought about 4corals from pet stores....most of my corals started as frags that I got from fellow reefers.

Congratulations What amaizing tank....

Great tank!! I envy your opportunity to use the sun as the main source for lightning... I couldn't even do it at the Peak of summer here in the Netherlands.
Very nice assortment of fish as well...
Good to read your choice for not placing plate montipora's anymore. I made exactly the same choice for the same reason. :-)

Congrats on the well deserved TOTM.

I've followed your tank build for a long time now. The fact that you built a sunroom onto your house just for your tank made you my hero a long time ago.
Love the whole sunlit concept. So wish that I can light my own tank this way someday.

Really suprised someone hasn't posted that your "stressing out your corals by giving them too much light" or even better "your using the wrong spectrum".:lmao:

Just a quick question, how much flow do you think you have going through the phosban reactor and how much media do you have in it.

Thank you. I'm using a phosban 550, that's about 3/4 full of rowaphos. Flow I have dialed back to a steady stream. I just ensure that the top bit tumbles a bit. Once a week a give it a full blast for a few minutes to shake everything up as it does tend to settle a bit, start caking at the bottom.

What does the Algae Scrubber do? How is it used? and what for?
that a very long topic best google around for detailed info. Basically think of it as an algae magnet where u want algae to grow, u harvest it every couple of weeks there by exporting the used nutrients out of the tank that was used to make the algae grow in the first place. U need light, running water, substrate medium for the water to flow over and algae to take hold and grow.

really stunning tank fella well done ;)
Thank you!

good job hope i have a system that looks like this one day.
Thanks, it can be achieved!
