I've always heard that you need to add some to start growing coraline. How old is the tank? Ca mg ect? Why not just get a piece of rubble with coralline on it from the LFS and put it in?

BE CAREFUL OF WHAT YOU WISH FOR.
You should need some to jump-start it. Lighting and cal & alk also plays a great deal in it also. I've had rocks for over a year and coraline never grew on it until i started dosing with B-Ionic. In a matter of 2-3 weeks i had the first signs on my glass, then all over the rocks.
Now it just crazy............... once you clean the viewing glass on a regular basis, you're good. My 6ft tank has a vast amount of color now. All different shades of pinks, reds and purples

Yes, generally you'll need to add some live rock or some other live coralline to get any growing in your tank.
