I like to get the biggest one that will fit in the space that I have available for it. It wouldn't hurt my feelings if it was even bigger then the DT.

def. the bigger the better. its not gonna cost ya more cause ur still gonna use the same equip. just gonna be more water in there. Plus you'll never have to worry about running out of room if you want to add stuff down the road.

Two points, go as big as you can, but try and keep it shallow. We all know why bigger is better (more water, etc) and stay as shallow as possible for clearance under the stand. Mine is 8' x 2' x 18" and was an acrylic frag tank at a LFS. Then I added dividers. So I have a 2' frag section, 2' fuge, 2' pump/evap section and 2' skimmer & reactor section.

I would use an aquarium and add some baffles. It's an easy thing to do and you can make it exactly the way you want it.

build a sump use any aquarium that can fit under your stand and use Acrylic Sheets Clear or glass which you can pick up at any of your local hardware store.

So is this going under the 280 in the stand or a basement sump?

in my opinion top edge of the sump to the place to take it out, there should be at least 6" so you can take equipment, collection cup, etc out more easy.

The length of the sump to me should be about 2/3 or 3/5 of the size of your display tank. width of the sump around 18"-24".

If it's Not going under the tank you can use a fuge then plumb it into a large rubbermaid poly tank with an external skimmer

So it sounds like you have pleny of room. Definitely think big. Something like this http://www.horsemansdepot.com/productdetails.aspx?part=A-ARM-10117 or this
would work great if you didn't want to buy a premaid.

Yup, definitely go as big as you can fit. I ended up adding a separate refugium and plumbing it because my sump no longer had space for it.
