View Full Version : T5's overkill for sump lighting?

I'm upgrading to a larger tank in the next few weeks and I am debating on how to light the larger sump.

I have used a common cfl screw in bulb with clip on fixture for my current sump (7g) for the last year or so and I had decent chaeto growth. (up until I dosed KickIch, after that it melted away)

My new sump will be much larger than my current one. A 40g breeder.

To keep it simple I could just buy two more clip on fixtures and similar cfl bulbs and light it that way.
But since my lfs is having a 40% off sale on all their T5 HO fixtures. I am debating on getting a Current Extreme Nova 36" 2x39w fixture for $70.
It seems like overkill but would fit the sump perfectly, completly light it and be less wiring than three individual clip on lights.
I also have a crazy selection of bulbs with the T5's.

Has anyone run macroalgae under T5's? How was growth? Which bulbs do you use?

Actually I use an ordinary shop light (Lowes) and a single 6500k CFL household bulb---(ditto) for my 30 g sump and cheato grows just fine. Cost me I think 15.00, or less, between the bulb and the shop light.
