So I haven't officially started my tank build thread on RC yet, because my current setup is the result of my old 34G Solana springing a leak, and forcing me to rush into setting up a replacement tank. I had been itching to upgrade for a while so though it wasn't exactly the way I would have planned it, it turned out ok. I had the Solana up and running (moved once) for over 3.5 years, it was a good tank, but I definitely grew out of it.

Old 34G Solana (RIP)
<iframe width="560" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/ycbqAbo34-8?rel=0" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

I will start a thread for my tank soon, it is a 65G Rimless (36.5 x 20.5 x 21). I took the 30lbs of liverock and all livestock plus about 80% of the water from the Solana in the switch, everything made it to the new tank with minimal losses, my carpet was the biggest loss due to the leak, we ripped it up and stained the concrete, which I dig because it's a lot better with the usual drips and drops from running a reef tank.

New 65G Setup (First day of the switch)

<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/67254321@N05/6842644412/" title="65G Rimless Upgrade by dustincmyers, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7050/6842644412_0c7f99bd61_z.jpg" width="640" height="480" alt="65G Rimless Upgrade"></a>

I have a 20G acrylic sump with SWC 160 Cone Skimmer, a fuge section in the middle, then return section. I originally had sand in the fuge section but have since taken all the sand completely out as it was just collecting junk, it's much better in there without it, there is liverock and chaeto down below after the return/skimmer section.

<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/67254321@N05/6842644620/" title="Untitled by dustincmyers, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7049/6842644620_b45962d7c6_b.jpg" width="768" height="1024" alt=""></a>

Anyhow onto the project I've dubbed the "AquaCloset". I decided I wanted to make use of a few brand new 20g long drilled tanks I had lying around so I decided, why not build a remote refugium and QT tank? As you can see my tank is in a corner (which was the deciding factor on it's size, otherwise it'd be bigger!) it is in my bedroom and the wall behind it is shared with my master closet.

I have a fairly large master closet and I wanted to make better use of the space, since I end up just using the shelves and such for piling junk up, and a bunch of clothes I never wear :)

<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/67254321@N05/6842645244/" title="Untitled by dustincmyers, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7051/6842645244_d7ee248f91_z.jpg" width="480" height="640" alt=""></a>

So I got to planning...

<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/67254321@N05/6988808623/" title="sketchup-design by dustincmyers, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7062/6988808623_f3e0ea34ba_z.jpg" width="640" height="622" alt="sketchup-design"></a>

We all know what happens when sketchup gets loaded up right? Well I figured out a way to make good use of my new space.

Two 25 Gallon RotoMold Reservoirs
to hold my RO/DI water, and saltwater

<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/67254321@N05/6842644994/" title="Untitled by dustincmyers, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7066/6842644994_134a474294_z.jpg" width="640" height="480" alt=""></a>

Fortunately, my closet also shares a wall with my laundry room, so an RO/DI unit was added to the plan. I can feed the RO/DI from and the waste water back to the laundry room with one easy hole in the wall :)

(Not finished in this photo, excuse the mess)

That's it for now :D I am actually a little behind in posting this i'm a good ways into the install but i'll post some more progress tomorrow!

Full disclosure, I do not have a wife but I do have an extremely awesome girlfriend who is 100% in support of this madness, she loves the tank and gizmos, and i'm grateful for that each day because I know the spouse factor is not so easy for everyone!

With the help of my gf's brother who does a lot of construction/plumbing/everything we designed the stand/frame to be as minimal as possible while still being able to hold up the two 20g tanks at full capacity at the top, it was important to not have to use a center brace as it would interfere with all the guts of the system going on below.

<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/67254321@N05/6842647548/" title="Untitled by dustincmyers, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7056/6842647548_cf76387303_z.jpg" width="480" height="640" alt=""></a>

It is not freestanding, it is tied into the walls so that adds some stability, but can be easily detached as well for the future. I think it will hold up just fine.

Love seeing these projects. Setup looks great. Might want to consider mounting a plastic bin under the ro/di unit with an audible water alarm (home depot sells some cheap battery operated ones). I doubt i'm the only person who's rig has sprung a leak after maintenance and it would suck to soak the carpet with water :)

That's not a bad idea, I'll definitely look into that... I was tempted to toss the carpet all together like I did in the master bedroom and stain the concrete since it came out so well, but I've got enough projects going on haha

Ooooh man, have you got my mind running now! I just bought my first home last month, and planned to upgrade my 40b in the move. I found an amazing price on an 80g (48x18x21h) with stand. I have been tossing ideas around in my head but cant decide how I want to setup my sump/fuge since the stand isnt that tall. I just realized that my coat closet is right behind one of the places I was thinking of putting the stand- I live in Phoenix, do I really need a coat closet?? I'm going home to measure later today!
Question- will this closet be closed all the time? Are you concerned about humidity in the closet? I think I would be for mine since I would want to keep the door closed. Keep the pics coming! I also saved the link for the barrels, 25g is a great size!

Well I'm glad I could be of some inspiration! When the option is Coat Closet vs Sump/Filtration room directly behind the display, the answer is obvious :)

The closet is in our bathroom, the door is pretty much always open unless I need to close it to keep the the little guy out at times. I think it'll be ok, but we will see, never know until you try!

UPDATE
Everything is pretty much wired up here, dry fitted plumbing all around -- it's all glued up as of now but haven't snapped the photos yet.

<img src="http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7209/6850825360_cedb581859_z.jpg" width="480" height="640" alt=""></a>

LOTS of wire organization to do, if there's one thing I can't stand, it's messy wiring.

Genesis Storm / ROCv float switch wiring, goes up the pipe and out, keepin' it clean.

Drain Pipe
This drains the RO/DI waste, the old water from the water changes, and the pipe going up will connect to my 20G QT tank for easy drains of that when necessary.

For a quick update, sorry no pics!

The project got put on a little bit of a hold but progress resumes tonight. I have dissasembled everything the prepare for painting the wood stand, after that everything will get buttoned back up and resume functions.

Before dissaembly, everything was working perfectly, water top-off's via the Storm work great, and I've done almost 30 gallons worth of water changes with the Genesis, there's nothing quite like doing water changes and not lifting buckets or jugs!

The only hiccup I had was that I did not put a siphon break on the ATO line, so thankfully, I had the wiring crossed and it did not function while I was at work, because had it turned the ATO on, it would have pumped for a few seconds, and then the siphon would have drained about 25 gallons of freshwater into my sump. :debi:

Fortunately that was an easy fix by just drilling a hole in the pvc right above the 25g water line inside the ATO reservoir.

I will post pics once the stand is painted and all buttoned back up!

how much were those sweet 25gal containers?

They were $111.98 total for both of them, free shipping which was definitely the deciding factor on the many websites that carry them.

(UPDATE) Currently the Genesis Renew and Storm system are both fully installed and operating, everything's been repainted and buttoned up for the most part so I'll have some new installation pictures asap. The refugium and QT tank portions of this build are on a temporary hold until I can find the funding :uhoh3: because I need to upgrade my return pump to handle the head height of the refugium and still have enough gph to run both the display and fuge. The QT tank could be setup at any time as it will be the usual simple QT setup.

I will say I am more than satisifed with the Renew, Storm, and RocV module thus far, they are fantastic, more to come on those as soon as I can!

Sorry for the lacking updates -- but here are some pics to go along with the previous text only update. As I said before everything has been running GREAT -- I don't regret any of the decision to build this. The single best decision within the decision was getting the RO/DI unit along with the RocV module for the Genesis Storm to control the filling/refilling of the FW reservoir. Originally I was just going to lug water from the store and refill 50 gallons at a time, that would have been fun :)

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8165/7250217438_ff8d7bc83b_z.jpg

I am currently changing 2 gallons / day without fail. When the ATO drains all the water out it kicks the RO/DI on automatically and refills the reservoir. This is supposedly better for the RO/DI unit as it's doing 20-25 gallons at a time rather than kicking on only to make a little bit of water as it gets used.

My water bill has not seen any significant impact as a result of the addition, so that's good.

Why didn't I put the sump in the closet, good question -- honestly never cross my mind until you mentioned it, maybe something I'll do in the future but I'll have to expand my stand as there isn't room for it right now. I do plan to put a few media reactors in the closet though, under the RO/DI unit, probably the dual reactor from BRS, for GFO and Carbon.

Updated FTS - Warning to the "tang police" - don't waste you're breath in this post, I do not and will not explain the what why and whens of my plans for my livestock -- they are healthy and happy, and have a much larger place to go in the future, when the time comes.

With that said, on to it:

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7243/7250283232_e1f24f7d3c_c.jpg

Everything is starting to grow, the added stability of the daily water changes plus the Tropic Marin Bio Actif salt really seems to be helping. I think the biggest thing I'm lacking is lighting. The Solaris i5 is a good light, I got it for free a while back, but I just don't think it packs enough punch to really do what modern day LED's can. It's also not wide enough as it's meant for a 24" tank. I'm thinking Radions, or the AI Vega once it's released, but more on that later in my soon-to-be posted tank thread.

A side note, I added another cleaner shrimp a few weeks ago and it paired up immediately with the other one in the tank -- after 2 weeks I had my first spawn, and the fish went crazy for the fresh feast, it was a pretty awesome thing to witness, hopefully it happens frequently.

Nice update. I'm tossing around the idea of putting my sump/fuge/frag tank into a closet that is several feet away from the tank. It would give me a lot of extra room to play around with, plus I already have my SW/FW storage tanks in the room so WCs would be simpler. I'd probably use my Profilux to change out water.

I just need to figure out how to go through a linen closet first.

You can barely make out the linen closet to the left of the pump.

I was wondering what the dimensions of your RO/DI tanks were. Online it says 12 x 25, but since they are round are they refering to 12 as being the diameter? It is 25 inches tall? I am interested in purchasing one for myself, but do not want to get to large of a size!

Great looking tank! You did a good job with the rebuild!

Thank you! it's coming along, starting to see some SPS growth, and have a few corals I thought were dead (I keep the skeletons either way) coming completely back to life, so gotta be doing something right!

I was a bit confused when looking at the dimensions at first too, but I found out that they are referring to the radius, but those dimensions on the site I ordered from are wrong any, well referring to the wrong tank at least. I looked it up on a few other websites to verify the size I was getting and it is

18" (diameter) x 30" tall for the 25 gallon

Small update - New goodies
---------------------------------

Got these mounted yesterday, but I am going to run them off of a manifold feed from the return that I have yet to build, so an upgraded return pump (thinking eheim 1262) is going to run the return, pump up to the remote fuge, and run the BRS Carbon and GFO reactors, with 2 extra spots open for future rectors if need be. Still not 100% on the pump choice, or whether I want to drill the sump and run an external pump (Panworld, Blowhole or something) ... Obviously running in sump would be easiest so that's where I'm leaning, any suggestions?

It's hard to get a handle on what the picture of the blurry pipes represent, what are those pipes for?

I don't know that you could do anything (cleanly) without going outside the house and back in with the pipes, because without tearing out the sheetrock and drilling through the studs you wouldn't be able to run pipes through that linen closet, I would just go out the house and along the outside, and back in where needed.

I've had a reef tank for 5+ years now and I can tell you auto water changes and an auto filling RO/DI + ATO is the single best investment/install I've ever done. I haven't lugged a 5 gallon jug of water in 3 months and I don't miss it for a minute, and the stability of the tank is an even bigger reason.

Chrisrush
05/30/2012, 09:33 AM
Yeah, sorry about the blurry picture. I wish I had a better picture.

Those pipes are from the water heater that is in the attic, basically a drain from the pan.

I got the approval from the wife to move everything from under the tank to the closet but I need to figure out a way to do it cleanly.

I didn't think about going outside the house but that might be the best option. The only issue would be that the house is stone and would be a mess to repair. I wouldn't mind going around the closet, but that post that is in the last picture on the far right has me concerned. I would have to drill through those 2x4s and I'd be worried that I would weaken the structure.

dekand

Well i'm no structural engineer, but it's no different than electricians drilling holes for a horizontal run of electoral cable across studs... Guess it would depend on how big your holes need to be (how big your pvc you want to run is)

Maybe someone with more construction experience can chime in on this

I agree, normally I wouldn't have much of an issue but due to the way the studs are lined up, I'm worried that I may end up weakening the structure. I have my builder coming out next to discuss. Thanks for the help.

Can you update some additional pics of the closet and what pumps are you using with the genesis?

That is the most up to date picture of the closet, I've plumbed in the 20g remote display fuge, 40lbs of live sand and some rock I had in the sump, as well as 2 BRS Reactors running GFO and Carbon separately -- I've been updating my build/tank thread as of this point as it makes more sense, so for more updates checkout

The 2 pumps running the Genesis Renew are both Marineland Euro Pump NJ1100 (http://www.amazon.com/Aquaria-Marineland-AS07052-Euro-Pump-NJ1100/dp/B005OCXOMU)

They do the job well and need to get the water up about 4' to the containers and have no problem with that.

Added a set of Radion XR30w's over the main tank :bounce2:

So once I figure out how to hang it best, the Solaris i5 that's still rocking' will go over the display fuge ...

I can definitely see improvements in the tank with the Radions after less than a week -- excited to see some long term results, after 6 months under the Solaris I was definitely seeing it's limitations.

It looks great. I assume you are using the other half of the closet as a "closet". Any humidity issues?

dekand
06/24/2012, 10:46 AM
thanks, yes the other 2/3rds of the closet are used for normal closet stuff, no humidity issues thus far and the lady has quite a bit of "delicate clothing" as she describes it ... so all is well so far a few months in.

You think that putting the radion in this position is better

I assume you mean the way they are hung ... They have a 24x24 spread even though they are a rectangle, so I'm not sure it makes much difference which way you lay them out -- this is the only config that would work with the hanging kit and rails that provides the best coverage -- it works for me, there is pretty even coverage across the entire tank

Really digging those storage containers. I've seen them before with hash marks to display how many gallons are left...do those not have that? The pic on their website shows the containers having the marks, but I can't see them in the pics.

dekand

yes they have the marks, but they are just beveled lines at each 5 gallon mark. I'll probably get some stickers printed soon to put the numbers next to the lines, not really necessary but I like little details like that.

Thanks! I'm really glad I took the time to do it right and plan it, the water changing station + the genesis systems has made this tank so easy to maintain and stable.

Someone's got a keen eye :) haha I was like i'm fairly sure I didn't have my pistol lying around in any pics, you must know the case that comes with them well.

I only have 1 XD but I do quite like it, I'd have more if I had the money!

Here's an update on the tank for you guys

----------------------------------------------------------

Things have been very stable and relatively problem free (knock on wood). I attribute that 100% to the Auto Water Change setup, and as of late this summer adding the BRS 1.1 ml dosers for CA/Alk and i've also added a ReefKeeper Lite to control the dosing as well as heaters. I imagine the added water volume and LR/sand in the display refugium also has aided in stability.

I've added frags here and there as I can afford them. I can say with 100% certainty that stabilizing my parameters with the auto dosing, as well as the Radions has made all the difference in the world for growth especially for the SPS. In the last 6 months they have really taken off.

Sorry about the crappy pics/color -- this is at the tail end of my lighting schedule so it's a bit bluer than it typically is during the bulk of the day.

FTS as of 1/1/13 (Duncans are closed up at the moment unfortunately, but they are thriving, they have probably tripled in head count since I got them)

<img src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8213/8339132060_84ae936f82_c.jpg" width="800" height="600" alt="Untitled">

Having some trouble finding the sweet spot for the alien eye chalice, moved it up last week and the edges seem to be bleeching in the hot spot of the light, hopefully it'll adjust it seems to be so as long as it doesn't get worse i'll keep it there as I like the placement.

<img src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8212/8338072811_66f4c278cb_c.jpg" width="800" height="600" alt="Untitled">

The white balance on these pics is awful, so other than the alien eye, nothing is bleaching, just overblown whites in the pic.

I had to move the green monti from the top to the sides, it looks darker in this pic than it is and it's been growing quite well in the new spot. I just didn't want it in the middle of my frags where it was it wouldn't have much room to grow out.

The montipora digitata is growing really fast. I picked up a red monti digi that's on the other side of the tank that is also growing quite fast.

Pink Birdsnest i picked up a few weeks ago, growing really fast. I think the frag below it is a "tyree pink lemonade" -- it's one of my favorite, love the yellow/pink combo, it's been a decent grower but it put down a base all around the frag plug unlike my other sps frags so most of it's growth has been there and it's just started to sprout out and up.

<img src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8217/8338073991_c4c7e1790f_c.jpg" width="800" height="600" alt="Untitled">

There's an acro frag i've not identified in the bottom left kind of hard to pick out, it's got a pale base right now but nice blue polyps, not sure what it is.

I'll get better pics as soon as I can!

Been trying to plan a mixing station using those 25g tanks. Is there anyway you could give me the dimensions of them?

No problem, they are 30-32" tall (shorter with cap off) and 18" diameter.

The space they take up with all my plumbing work attached is about 2'x45" in case you were wondering.

Yes I did and had no luck. Maybe it has to do with location? I may just end up going the brute trash can route since I can get them local for $30
