I just started using the Magic Eraser to help clean the walls of my acrylic tank. Works great.

I used the EXTRA POWER version. It appears to be the same as the Original, but it says on the box that it lasts longer. It doesn't appear to have any added chemicals from what I can tell.

Anyone else use the EXTRA POWER version? Most discussions here are about the ORIGINAL version.

I just wanted to check to make sure the EXTRA POWER version is just as inert as what be believe the Original to be (melamine foam only).

I use the original version, no experience with the extra power version. Inside of the tank in answer to the question above.

Thats pretty neat I've never heard of this... whats the benefit to using this over a mag-float?

Yep, inside of tank. I use Novus and microfiber towel on the outside.

There are special mag-float inside attachments that make stubborn calciferous algae removal easier. But magic eraser works the best for stubborn stuff.

Yes, outside I also use Novus.

are you saying that you use this to remove your coraline algae?

I cut the Extra Power magic eraser in half and place it in between the inside magnet and the acrylic. On the outside I put a microfiber towel between the magnet and the acrylic. I just buffed out my tank and don't want any scratches.

On the glass or acrylic, yes.

I used it yesterday for the first time in my two tanks.

All the fish are fine in the first and the zoas are in the second.

Yeah i have been doing this for a couple months. Really helps with the stubborn brown algae spots that grow on the glass. I leave the coraline on everything but the front glass and most of the sides. I think it looks good.

These do not contain any chemicals just the inert pad. This is why you don't want to use the kitchen or bath ones for this.

Yeah I started using the original one yesterday and it is wonderful. Very useful. The original version will not kill your fish because it is just a sponge. No chemicals

I am surprised they will not scratch acrylic tanks. They are abrasive, almost like a 3000 grit sand paper. I know they will dull shiny painted surfaces. The other issue I have is that they fall apart easily.

I use them on my boat extensively. Heres a great article on them:

There are no active ingredients in melamine foam, however formaldehyde is an inert ingredient. Its safe to use in your reef in between the mag float - but don't leave it in there after each use. Like anything in your tank, your scavengers will go after it. I cut mine in 4s (theres a post out there with pics somewhere).

I have no experience with the extra power, only the originals though.

Still looking for someone who has used the Extra Power version for a while and can confirm no issues. I'm pretty sure it's fine, since its just a longer lasting version of the Original, but still want to check other people's experience.

Hope you guys that have newly discovered the Magic Eraser are enjoying your scratch free view of the tank!

Magic eraser is an abrasive foam. It's actually scratching the surface, just smaller then you can see.

You can use them to whiten your teeth, but it will make your dentist very angry.....

For tank cleaning buy one of the toilet cleaner wands with the pinching fingers normally used for disposable pads. "scrubbing bubbles is 100% plastic " Then just grip the foam and go....

Ingredient Purpose: Melamine Polymer Abrasive foam in my tank you just don't know what that Foam can do later on down the road to your livestock. I would never take that chance.

Ummm melamine foam is just a cracked out, plasticized version of styrofoam..... I don't get it....

I'm willing to bet you have at least 1 melamine plate, cup or bowl in your kitchen....

Theres no issue with it unless your fish actually ingest it. It has no active ingredient (hence no way for "chemical" to leach out of it.)
