So yesterday, I went to the store and got a Red Firefish. All he does is hide though. He comes out for like a minute every couple hours, but most of the time he sits in a cave. All that I have right now are him and a pair of clowns. Is that why? Does he need a buddy??

How big is the tank? It's normal for them to be shy when first introduced.

They tend to be shy fish. I had one years ago that would go a month at a time without venturing out of the rocks except at feeding time. Then it would be out for a week or two, get spooked by something and then go back into hiding. The purple fire fish are just as shy. I currently have a Helfrich's firefish, and it stays out in the open all the time. They are a little pricey, but at least you can see them.

That's normal for a firefish. They feel safer within the rockword and some just don't like to venture too far off.

After a few days / weeks it will start to come out more.

It's normal try to spot feed and make sure he cannot jump out of the tank or he will surf the carpet

Yeah, thats normal. I have 3 purple ones in my tank right now and it took nearly a week before they would even come out of their cave other than for food. I've had them over 4 mths now and they come out and stay in the water current looking for food to pass by......
always flicking their dorsal fin. They move about the tank occasionally, but always know where their cave is for safety.

Mine is the same way. once in awhile he comes out, but as soon as something spooks him, he is gone!

If its one thing, when they are out the really give a splash of color to any tank. Blends in with the coraline algae so to speak. wonderful fish to have
