So i'm in the process of setting up a Genesis Reef system for automated water changes.

Normally the waste water would be emptied into a drain, but for me there is no drain close by. The closest drain is about 50 feet away, the water water will need to go up about 25 feet to the ceiling and then another 50 feet to the sink drain below.

I plan to do the 50 gallon water changes into a 55g drum to hold the waste water then pump it off whenever its full

My question is, what size tubing should i use? i was thinking about using 1/4" RO line to make it easier to install.

What pump will can i use to pump so high and so far? I was thinking of using a high flow pump like a mag-24, or possibly a dosing pump.

How could i automate the emptying of the waste water bin?

Thanks for anyone trying to help.

1/4" will take forever to empty. Use 1/2" with push connect fittings or a garden hose.

By far the simplest way to do this will be to purchase a sump pump with built-in float switch, e.g. Little Giant, available on Amazon. These pumps can easily handle 25' and are cheaper than the Mag24.

that is a good idea. do you have one in mind? would it be safe for saltwater?

Safe for dumping saltwater in a drain. Not for putting saltwater into a tank.
