I have the ASM G4 skimmer that has a crack and a hole in the cone part of it. Can someone please suggest the best way to repair it?

i had one with a similar crack that i bought at a yard sale. tried to seal it with silicone but failed. tried again with super glue and it still works fine to this day. no leaks at all!

What kind of material should I use to fill the hole which is about the size of a dime?

I repaired a cracked skimmer with the same acrylic that is used for acrylic nail extensions, worked a treat. Maybe ask in a local salon for help if you don't know anyone personally.

Here's what I would do. Use some sandpaper to roughen up the area on the outside of the skimmer. Tape a square of saran wrap inside the skimmer over the entire affected area. Mix some boatbuilding or hobby epoxy resin with some thickening material filler until it's a thin putty and use a small spatula to fill the hole and the cracks. Cut a square of fiberglass coth to cover the affected area, wet it out with epoxy resin and apply over the area on the outside.

I have all this stuff lying around for other hobbies. If you try to buy boatbuilding material the quantities are big enough that it won't be cost effective. A well stocked hobby store should have everything availble in small, affordable quantities. You don't want to use the hardware store epoxy in the little plunger-dispensors: it's thickened as a glue and you would want a thin laminating resin.

But that's just how I would do it.

I use JB Wled quick weld. sets in 4 mins and cures in 4 hours. is steel grey in color, but will NOT leak...EVER!

Assuming I would use Weld On #16, what material should I use to fill the hole?

I just bought a skimmer off here that was damaged during shipment. Cracked the acrylic and put a hole in it. Had a local reefer repair it. He used acrylic he cut to size with weld on 16 than used #4 i believe for the crack. Good to go.Mine was actually worse than yours and it sealed it.

So fill the hole with Weld-on 16 and it will solidify? (I've never used Weld-on).

cut a piece of acrylic that fits into the hole and use weld on 16 to seal it.

Just so you know... ASM Skimmers are clear PVC....
I use standard PVC glue.. never a problem.
But if it were cast or extruded. Then Weldon would be my choice
