On the weekend I finally got water and live rock into my 1st marine tank.

The live rock I got happened to come with some bad macro (Caulerpa Prolifera) I am told. Now my tank is brand new, sumpless running a hob skimmer and for now an AC110 with carbon and phosphate reducing media.

The live rock also happened to come with some mushroom hitchhikers, alot of them unfortunately on the same rock with the bad macro.

I have a hob refugium on order which hasn't arrived yet, but I am looking for options on what to do with the rocks, the macro and those mushrooms. Can a blackout deal with the macro or could that result in the killing of the mushrooms as well? With not much in the tank to feed on would an algae loving invert or 10 help?

Can the mushrooms be relocated somehow? For now I have put the 2 rocks with macro in my QT while i figure out what I can do.

Any suggestions will be appreciated.

Caulerpa prolifera is not one of the "bad" species within the Genus Caulerpa. If it was C. taxifolia, I would say get it out of there, however, I keep C. prolifera by intent. Just keep it pruned, and when you prune it, don't let it break up. The entire Genus, has been maligned because a few species can get out of hand.

The macro looks like C. prolifera, if you ask me. The yellowish, I will not venture a guess.

Saw this rock in another thread... was going to say nice rock.

I wasn't going to turn it down at $2.50/lb!!

Prolifera is good stuff!

However... I see a few different types of algae there. Maybe it's just the pic...

just off center of the rock, poking up behind a mushroom, there's one blade of macro that looks like it has a serrated edge. That may not be prolifera. Try to follow it's root to see if it's a different plant altogether. Prolifera has smooth edged blades.

True enough, hard to see it though. I blew it up, looks like maybe something was munching on it. I would like to see some different colored coralline though, a bit tired of the pinkish/purple stuff. Lots of flavors of it out there. ;)

I am thinking perhaps 3 kinds of algae. The leafy stuff all seems to be the same even though some of it has some red colouration the leaves appear to be the same shape. Then there is the hairy stuff, which in these pics looks white its actually green, then there is the yellow stuff...
