View Full Version : Slightly Worried about Internal Parasites

One of my pylei fairy wrasses hasn't put on any weight (visible weight I should say) since I got it several weeks back. Her appetite is great! She eats formula one flakes like there is no tomorrow. She will also eat most frozen foods (mysis, brine, scallops, shrimp, tuna, nori, broccoli, and many other things are in the DIY fish food from the local club). I feed three times a day: flake in the morning and afternoon, then in the evening I will feed the frozen food or flake (frozen is every other day because there are coral foods that I don't want causing nutrient spikes in QT). Currently the QT is being dosed with Cupramine and I am one week in. However, I think internal parasites should be dealt with first (didn't think of this until I told my LFS she wasn't gaining much, if any, weight). Suggestions are welcome!

Overall healthy female:

The one I am concerned about. Slightly tightened stomach area (behind the head) Stomach looks more slightly more sunken in, in person:

Did you observe white stringy feces? I noticed your sig mentions QT and copper and was wondering if you dose Prazi-Pro as well. I also would consider Seachem Focus along with Seachem Metro to soak their foods.

IMO, every fish should be treated with Prazi-Pro; it can even be done in the DT. Some people use it at the same time as cupramine; but it's mfg says PP isn't as effective used that way. PP does a good job on worms outside and inside the fish. Why so long a QT period?

The wrasses were picked up Feb. 5. I allowed them to settle in for a week when I noticed some worm like thing attached to the eye (pupil area). This was flukes from what I got for feedback after posting. I did a three week long PP treatment because the first two shots didn't finish the job. This brings me to the beginning of March (or there abouts). I noticed some ick spots on the wrasses. After noticing this I got up to the LFS the following weekend to get Cupramine. Until last weekend, I didn't have a test for the copper so I just started that last week. I thought the weight was taking its time, but three weeks of feeding three times per day hasn't put a dent in it. Here I am now wondering how to go about this.

I haven't noticed white stringy feces yet. Most of the time it is orange because of the fairly heavy focus on formula one flakes. They are addicted to the flakes so I figure it will be the base of their diet being that they only like certain frozen foods (mysis, squid, brine, etc) randomly (don't like it after 2-3 feedings).

I 100% agree. Treat every fish with praziquantil.

Treating with PP is a standard for my QT procedure. That is one thing I will not change. The one thing that I am changing though is proactively treating ick with the tank transfer after these pylei and clowns are done with QT. Planning out the stand build for a tank transfer station.

Is there anything besides internal parasites that could be preventing the female from gaining weight?
