I see a lot of DIY foods that are really big does any body have any small recipes I only have a 55g tank so I don't need to freeze 10lbs of food and get freezer burned. I am just looking for a small one that I can freeze a few ziploc bags of food. Thanks in advance

This is not a small batch but I will be following this recipe soon, http://www.cvreefers.org/showthread.php?12361-DIY-coral-fish-food!-(LONG). This is by far the most comprehensive recipe that I have found. I agree with you on the 10lbs of food. I am going to post on my local forum and see if anyone wants to split it with me, so that could always be an option.

Just curious if you had anything to add to the recipe?

WOW Looking at that recipe, you could make it to sell. Or try buying half amounts.

That is a huge recipe but nice if you had people to split it!

Me too. Maybe a market here somewhere. Then you would have to be able to buy in bulk and at wholesale. I wonder if it's better than anything out there already?

I ended up getting the frozen mix from walmart, adding cyclopseez, flake food, selcon. Worked out great the selcon will make skimmer go crazy for hours. But in all i ended up with 5 trays of food

How did you chop/blend the frozen mix? Did you just use a blender and put in a little bit at a time?

I think I am going to do something similar to what you did. I have several different things laying around that I should not have to purchase all the different stuff online. I started adding it up and it got pretty pricey and I cant seem to find anyone locally to split it with.

I have a small hand held food processor that I used but yes just chopped it up in processor and used my old frozen food trays that I had. I then used a vaccum sealer to seal all but one bag. I added one drop per cube of selcon not sure if its enough or to little.

I think that frozen mix is 10lbs, correct? Did you end up using all 10lbs? When you were chopping it up was there a fine line between small pieces and liquified?

its 14oz you can over chop it and I seem to have some pretty good size chunks which is good for me casue my Clown takes it to my BTA. Here is a link to the Mix Seafood (http://www.walmart.com/ip/Aqua-Star-Uncooked-Seafood-Mix-14-oz/16627963) I used!

Ah, maybe it was Sams that had the 10lb bag. I will get a bag at wal-mart and get a mix going. Thanks.

I wonder how these would work for freezing the processed food in? http://www.amazon.com/Cubette-Mini-Ice-Cube-Trays/dp/B000I1ZXIK/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1335282683&sr=8-1. Nice, small cubes and re-useable.

Would using the silicone cube trays be easier?

The only problem I can see is that outside rim, otherwise, they should last longer and once frozen, break the food out and put it in vacuum bags.

I have purchased flat packs of food before and then just take something (small hammer, end of butter knife, etc) then break up the food into pieces. Some days they get a little more some days a little less but in the end it averages out.

Let us know how long your home made food lasts. Also is it cost effective, I'm sure it is.

I'm thinking I'm going to try to cut that 10 pound recipe down to use the size package above and try to get away from buying food. The price of food at the LFS is way too high and to order it online kills you when the shipping is added in.

Well, I mixed up my concoction and gave it a try and the fish seem to love it. The Wal-Mart mix package, some formula 1 flake food, some 50/50 bloodworm/brine shrimp, some salad shrimp, mysys shrimp, a couple of sheets of Green Marine Algae, Kent's Coral Accel, and some crushed garlic. All were rinsed well and then put in the food processor and blended well. packaged flat in zip lock bags since my ice trays haven't shown up yet.

Nice, the next time I make some I am going to add sheets of algae. I did add cyclopeez to mine so the corals get fed too
