View Full Version : 10x guideline - filtration only or total flow?

I have a 38 gallon FOWLR tank that I'll soon be drilling to accommodate a sump. Based on the standard 10x rule I should be looking for 380+ gph turnover. I'm wondering: is the 10x tank volume guideline for filtration only, or is it the total turnover including powerheads? I have two powerheads that will generate around 700 gph on their own, so is 380 gph really necessary through the sump?

This obviously affects the size of the overflow kit and pump I will get and I'm trying to spec those things out so I can get on with my conversion from canister to sump. There's a 300 gph kit that I'm interested in but I don't want to be undersized.

Thanks for any help.
