Stray voltage or water contamination (metal, chemical) in tank come to mind. Are you running GAC?

Dosing anything?
Using Kent carbon?
Spray anything around the tank?

Sushi girl any problems with kent carbon or are you just asking if he's just using gac? I just switched to kent carbon so just making sure :)

Sound like an inadvertent pollutant was introduced.

TucanSam, there was a recall on some Kent Carbon. I don't know the details, just kept seeing it on here. Maybe a google search or hit their site?

You're adding 1 tablespoon of kalk every 15-20 min? How old is the tank?

Side note, please stop with the excessive misspelled caps, thank you.

I would test the freshly made RO/DI water for traces of Chloramine/Chlorine/ Ammonia. I've also seen the Kent Carbon issue come up several times recently. That sounds like it might be something to look into.

My carbon is Kent though I've been using the same lot for many months. Kalk is added via auto top off and tank is just under a year old. I do have several girls living in the house and perfume could be a possibility as could stray voltage.

Playa, I don't have a test for chlorine but I could get one tomorrow. I do have a couple brass fittings in my plumbing, could they be leaching copper? I don't have a test for copper either

If you're water company uses Chloramine and your carbon blocks and/or DI are spent then you could be doing water changes with disinfectant. It's something to look into.

This is sad news,i too have killed many fish while learning.

Stray voltage! Probably from a heater. Can you test for it? Do you use a grounding probe?

Could be some kind of chemical contaminant, but if I had to be I'd go with stray voltage.

how old is the tank? if under 6 months, then a few of us on another forum think that these deaths come from a sudden increase in bacterial activity at night causing a sudden loss of oxygen in the system killing the largest organisms first. this "syndrome" seems to affect those tanks that are tall for their size. the 55 seems to be very susceptible to this. the sooner the critters were introduced to the new system the greater the chance of this occurring. this "syndrome" very seldom affects corals or inverts. just the higher more active organisms in the system.

Yes they could definitely be leaching/concentrating copper in the tank.

the brass fittings are on the plumbing for the tank? If so, then yes they could be an issue and get them replaced.

I brought a water sample to my lfs to test for the things I don't have kits for. Copper is 0 and double checked all my other tests with nothing notable. I put in a grounding lead in case of stray voltage so hopefully that will help. Green hairy mushroom looks terrible and the cardinal fish isn't eating. Both clowns look ok as does my galaxia, hammer and all zoas. Did another water change today and ill keep doing them as fast as I can make water. Not sure what else I can do.

It only takes a couple of days for brass to start showing signs of corrosion in saltwater.

Definitely sounds like cleaning chemicals on/in/near the tank.
Avoid spraying any aerosols in the same room as your aquarium!
Also, if you've had your hands in the tank, it could have been anything you touched...
