I am setting up a 100 gallon reef tank. I am curious whats the least amount of rock I could get away with and still be able to sustain a good reef? I will have a 40 gallon sump.

Depends on ur bioload and how porous the rock is. If u are going for a minimal look I would try BRS pukani or Marco rocks and put a bunch in the sump. I got 50lbs of pukani for my 90 and it's def not minimal scaping.

I put 50 lbs in a 40 breeder and could use 25 to 50 more.

IMO, you have 100 gallons and probably 20 in the sump, so Id do minimum 120 lbs between the display and sump. My 40 breeder had 55 lbs of rock.
