with fish, anemone, corals and invertebrates - what would an empty ten gallon tank best be employed as?

What would you do with it?

how long does a reef tank need to go without fish to consider all parasites dead
(and what else besides fish would need to be absent)

well, that's not really the way it works. read ALL of the 'stickies' at the top of this page.

you set up the tank and get it running, then you wait for the bio cycle to complete. during this time you can have some livestock in qt. once the cycle is complete, you can add your livestock to your display tank. the qt process is to ensure none of your fish are sick. in essence, you won't have a 'reef' tank set up for the get-go. it will take time to establish a reef, assuming that is your goal.

this is a condensed version of the process. much more detail is covered in the stickies.

I think you are looking for cut and dry answer. Saltwater doesnt have those kinds of answers. There is alot to know. And alot of variables which can differ with each and every tank
