From what I've read clowns in a tank do not like new ones being added. If you would've put all four in at one time they probably would've been ok. I have read some tips on it though, like rearrange the rock work and adding the new fish at night. I'm not sure that would work for clowns though, I'm sure there are some members that can give you better answers on here, but my guess would be no.

if the new members are bigger than the original .thats ok¡*or£¬in another case that u put many fish but not one at a time so that the old ones wont have a sole target to offense£¬which let the fresh fish to acclimate the tank before being killed¡*

to be honest, even if you were to have added them at the same time, once they formed mated pairs they will go after the others.

I hope you don't mean you're going to put 4 in a 40 breeder. The same problem still comes up.

Don't do it. As stated above, when they pair up, the loners are done. Yes, those cute little Nemo's are evil. Pals, until one day, BAMMMM! Get out of my tank! No matter what size you add last. This is what I know, not what I heard.

Not in a40. No, I have to Percs in my 220 and I recently added 2 black perc into the tank and they get along.
I'm hearing reasoning is-LARGER tank(220) and even tho different color fish same body style. I under NO circumstance tho condone different species in a 20/40 gallon. Please don't

I've heard even a 180g isn't big enough for multiple pairs of clowns.

I have three clowns in my 120 but I added the mated pair last so they pretty much stick to themselves. Occasionally the female of the mated pair becomes a bit bossy but not enough to cause injury. They've all been together now for over 6 years.

In my experience it's maybe a 50/50 chance in a 180g tank. And your chances are better if they are percula or ocellaris rather than clarkii or tomato.

I agree with all of the above. Juvi clowns can be kept in groups. As they sexually mature, they form bonded pairs and establish a territory. They will defend their territory to the death, literally. their behavior is more territorial than aggression. They demand a territory that is much bigger than the footprint of most home tanks; so the pair will consider the entire tank theirs. This territorial behavior of clown pairs is really a big part of their fascination, IMO. there's nothing you can do to change it. The clowns will often attack any new fish (or a hand), not just other clowns. But, other fish learn their place and will be tolerated, other clowns won't be.

good choice in the end. You'll just end up with dead fish more than likely a couple weeks in. Do a shared loop multi tank setup sharing a sump if you want to do two pairs. Two 40 gallons would be great. Just make sure they can't see from one tank onto the next.
