I'm living in a townhouse built in the 1930's, plaster walls and hardwood floors (real hardwood floors).

Shoud I worry about a the wieght? I figure with 40 pounds of sand and 40 pounds of rock leaves me with about 30 gallons of water.

I'm guessing the wieght to be around 350lbs or so.... Am I off with the numbers?

Anyway, should this be a worry?

Not if you spread it well with your stand, meaning not 4 legs but rather that the whole width of the stand lies on the floor.

Thats a good estimate, as long as the tank is set across the floor joists and not with them you should be ok. Even with the floor joists and with a stand using 1in material your olny putting about 3lb/sq in. on the floor.

i don't even have to think twice with a tank that small. i would't even worry about it

Take the surface area of the stand that touches the floor and divide by the total weight of the system.

my 3lb/sq. in doesn't take into account the weight of the stand, lights, sump ect.. though just the 350lbs estimate you gave.

They make stands out of plywood for 40-60 gallon tanks. I don't think you should have an issue with it.

I have two QT tanks a 29 and a 20 BOTH sitting on a sturdy computer desk. No problem.

If you can jump and not fall through the floor your good. Serious. Unless your a small person, then you might have to invite a few friends over and jump a bit.
