I bought this one from DD a couple months ago. Right now, it is less mint color, but still looks good. When I have time, I will update the current one as well.
Please show your Strawberry Shortcake for me!

Oh...my...God!!!! That's got to be the nicest one I've ever seen. Lots of strawberry in that shortcake. Great score!

Yup that is very nice, actually what should be the placement for the ssc? If the ssc lost the green, is it due to too much or too little light? Thanks.

I'd like to know also. I heard lower in the tank, but mine has lost most of the green. Thinking of moving it up.

I have the DFS version of the Strawberry Shortcake, I forget what they call it....I keep my frag up high and to the left of the direct lights and it has kept the intense green. I have very red polyps...when they peak out, not much polyp extension on this particular coral in my tank. The pink corallites are somewhat muted, really muted compared to that picture above which is incredibly gorgeous :D. I think as it grows and develops into a colony I will get much more of the pink corallites. Try moving yours up into higher light and see if the green returns.
I've noticed that my Tierra Del Fuego has really colored up as it has grown. The pink has developed tremendously. It is a much faster growing coral than my DFS shortcake.

I believe the DFS shortcake was called the northwoods pink lemonade.

I have the original Unique corals version and it is drop dead gorgeous. Took awhile to get going but now that it has it's a stunner! With so many imports around it can be hard to find a hardy strain. The UC version is bulletproof!

I got a "ssc" a year ago but I think its actually something else. Its really yellow and pink but it tables. All the pics I see of shortcakes are wild colonies, I still haven't seen one grown out in a reef tank! So really I don't know what its supposed to look like... *waits for more pics...*

Yeah, I want to see the captive grown one. Wild SSC is really hardy, but might be difficult to keep the original color.

Mine is getting a bunch of light, very high flow, still more pink than green though. I attribute it to alk issues that I am dealing with at the moment. Mine also has been encrusting like a boss. I mean a lot. Like it has grown approximately 1/8" up, but has encrusted literally 2" around. weird. eh, hopefully it will look like those amazing pics above soon!

Yep, that's the name of the DFS version. Thanks :D. I tried the UC version twice and they both RTN'd on me. Not their fault....it just didn't take to my tank. I'd love to try another frag of the UC version from back then. I think my tank would support it now for sure.

Wayne, gorgeous shot. I love how the encrusting portion in the foreground just GLOWS!!

Here are two shots the one with the blues on is fairly old and the 10k pic is a little bit newer. I should probly get an updated one since it is one of my favorites that I have.

I would like to get an updated shot but I pulled four huge colonies out to make room and forgot to think about the reactor drip, in 3 days the alk went from 9 to 12 :hmm2: so a few things are looking a little funny, plus I did a few days lights out and stuff is still looking a little off. I hope it all works out a few validias are showing STN at the base and I only have a week to get the reactor (which has been killing me with it's little recirc pump) dialed in before I go on vacation...

Onereef, can you explain the differences between pink lemonade and ssc?

Sure. The pink lemonade looks mainly yellow with pink polyps. The SSC should be mint green base\branches with pink/red tips/corrallites. Both are stunning corals. I was just saying a few of the claimed SSC corals posted in this thread look kind of yellow with pink polyps like a pink lemonade. Of course, it could just be the angle and lighting during the picture taking. It is very hard to get corals to show in photographs what they really look like at home and to our naked eye.

so mine had grown into a nice little colony before I had some issues with low alk and too busy at work and home to take proper care of the tank. I thought I had lost it completely, but I fragged it and the frag was even STN'ing, but now has stopped and it is now reversing, but the frag I have it smaller than the one I started with! lol

I would love it if people would also chip in on the difference. Like species type? Who had the "first" SSC? Why are some of them all pink? It seems like so many people have one but everyone is different. I just call mine a tabling shortcake. I know where it came from and I don't know to many others that table like mine. And then some people who know what they are talking about tell me mine looks like a true strawberry shortcake? I dunno... All I know is I love it and most corals that look like it. But I would like to know more about the whole SSC story.

But in a few weeks it turned more green.

Ow growth wise for some reason nothing going to the top, however encrusting about 1 millimeter every 3 days. So thats going pretty fast.

This was sold to me as a SSC, but the only hint of any green I've seen is the growing edge, which I feel is more of a light turquoise. I keep waiting from some green, but I'm starting to think it isn't a SSC. It is a painfully slow grower. Thoughts?

No, no pests for a while. I did zoom in to the pic, but there was so much pink and green, it dazzled me. :)

I couldn't see any of the red spots you mention, even in zoom?. Did you actually see them in this photo, or just put 2 and 2 together in view of the polyp extension?.

The coral had an acrylic plate sat about 1cm above it. I can't photograph it otherwise. Unfortunately, this removes super polyp extendo mode.

Thanks Franky,

My tank is 6ftx8ftx3ft tall. I have 7x400W Reeflux 10K and 2x400W Radiums.
This piece was sat on the floor of the tank for about 2 weeks or so, under a Radium. Much of the coral was still quite brown, with thick skin… i.e. healthy tissue, so I moved it up between 2 Reeflux 10K's. about 6 weeks ago.
It's about 3 inches under the water, but half way between two bulbs. It also has 1 KZ Fiji Purple and 1 Narve Blue T5 directly over it.

I haven't measured PAR, but it sits in intense light… likely around 600 PAR.
I have a few spots in the tank around 800 PAR.

The flow in my tank is huge. It receives indirect flow, but lots of it.

So, very high 10K Halide light ( with Blue and pink T5). Very high indirect flow.

I originally mounted it on a pretty dense rock so luckily it can support the colony weight right now. The rock is also completely encrusted by colony. That's actually my wife's hand holding up the colony while I was taking the picture.

There are at least a couple of distinct variants of the SSC. I have 3 SSC frags. One being the Aussie version which has far more Red and a lime green base.

There is also the original Unique Corals SSC which is much nicer IMO. I also have this version as well. Its growth and structure is slightly different. Colours are more intense and it has a deeper green base. There is more green on this version than the red/pink parts.

I also have a 3rd version which is still brown.

Note also that placement in terms of light can determine the amount of the green base. Kind of like what happens with the Red Planet. I also feel its easier to maintain the red colour on the Aussie SSC and the green colouration take a while longer ie once the coral is happy again.

Man, come visit London. I have 3 different SSC frags...the largest frag is a decent size (also the nicest out of my SSC varieties), I would cut you a piece for sure. :D

Greece is in the European Union so as long as you pack in the luggage carefully, no issues with CITES etc.

Tell your wife you are taking her on a short romantic trip to London. http://www.ultimatereef.net/forums/images/smilies/hysterical.gif

I'm sure it will cost me some "harrods time" but on the other hand i'll have the pleasure of meeting you and that's something i'd really like,to say the least:)

There is something i'm planning on june so maybe i'll de-strawberry you:p

If i'll come back with scc...the trip will be 100% romantic...at least for me:lol:

I am getting better colors out of frags placed about 10" lower than mother colony. I am thinking about switching out next bulb change to 250w radiums. I have the galaxy select-a-watt set on 400w turbo. I will first turn down setting to just 400w on ballast.

Look forward to it. Please PM me link when you do. Would love to read about your tank. :D

PS, it doesnt matter when you start a thread. I prefer threads started once the system is a little mature anyway because you get to see the good results of a system.

Much of which can be attributed to the wide range of cameras/phones taking the pictures and the lighting used on the tank.

Typically what a ssc is an A. Microlados and not Nasuta. But there a lot of similar varieties out there getting the name SSC thrown on it. At least that's what I've seen....

Nice pieces everyone!! When I got mine about 8-10 months ago it was a really nice size frag. After an alk issue about 6 months ago I lost most of it. After several fraggings I managed to save a tine piece. In the last couple months all of its tissue has grown back around the skeleton, it has begun encrusting the plug again and has colored up really nicely. Cant wait for it to grow into a nice big colony! 276662 first shot was a couple weeks ago under my old t5s. Newest shot top down under my new mh fixture! 276663
