I've had this coral for 6-8 months and it has been thriving. Suddenly, though it looks like tissue is receding. I don't see any pests. I do have other monti's which are so far doing well. Parameters: salinity 1.025, alk 10.8 ph 8.2, ca 460, Mg 1400, PO4 .04, nitrates 0. I have Radion LEDs. My Ca recently dipped down to 325. I don't know exactly how long it was at that level but previous testing from 2 weeks before was 460. Could this be the cause? Any input is greatly appreciated. This is a special piece to me and I'd hate to loose it.189885

I would retest again to be sure. It doesn't sound likely that it can droo so quick.

I doubt it was the calcium drop. A bacteria war? When's the last time you changed your carbon?

After I corrected the calcium it's been stable for two weeks at 460

Carbon was last changed about a month ago.

I am no expert in chalices but I believe that the Alk is too high, I will not keep it higher than 9.5 with chalices, also I know for sure that they don't like direct or constant high water flow, med to slow is best.

i have a jedi mind trick monti (which i think is what you have.) my cal is 390 and alk is 9 and mag reads 1250 and it has been doing great for a while with those settings

You should be getting most of the spectrum you need with your led unit. I think it about 5+different colors which is pretty cool.
I do think that with most Lps chalice when you seen the tissue receding it could be flow. Depending on the chalice you need to check what kind I of lighting they enjoy flow ect.
Also chalice like dirtier water which I'm sure you already know just putting it out there.
Good luck

Well I am hoping the issue is that the Alk went up to 10.8 and the ca dropped into low 300s from neglect more than anything else. My husbandry habits have changed over the last few weeks. Now the parameters are back to normal so I hope the coral comes back. It has been incredibly healthy since I put it in the tank and it hurts me to see it suffering. Thanks for input.

You bring up a good point with the flow. I haven't moved the Jedi ( monti) but I did remove a power head from the tank to use to mix salt ( impeller on previous pump broke). Maybe removing the power head which was positioned on back glass (flow moving front to back) changed the amount of flow the coral gets from MP 60 that is mounted on side glass (flow moving across the tank....so across the Jedi). I will put the power head back and see what happens.

One last thought, and I hate to say this out loud, but do you think my flame angel may have taken a liking to the Jedi?

Stability of parameters (ca, alk, mag, etc.) and even the bad stuff matters. Quick changes in any of these can wreak havoc on some or all corals. Some corals act as the beacons of the reef, and are the first to stress when various parameters get far enough off or change too quickly. My guess is that your JMT responded to fluctuations in ca and other variables. This could trigger a flame angel or other fish to feast on stressing coral.
