Hi guys i am new to this saltwater hobby. Let me start of by saying this that i have been reading a lot on reef central and its a great forum :) Okay so today i set up this new 29 gallon saltwater tank. My neibour had his saltwater running for around 5 years so he gave me about 35 pounds of live rock because he needed some space for his tangs. I have a few questions.

1.Since the live rock is from an established aquarium how long do you think it would take me to cycle my tank and what would be the process? (Live rock is fully cured)

2. Rock has some coral like stuff on it i'm not sure what they are but there are a bunch of them. I'm attaching a pic so you guys can see. After you guys see the pics can you please tell me if they would be okay in my tank since it's brand new setup and not yet cycled and one more thing the light is normal t8 15 watts since i am planning on doing FOWLR.

Here are the pics. Do you guys think its good live rock and what kind is it.

I would appreciate the anwers :)

If the rock is established, you may not see a cycle at all, and if you do it will be a small/short one. What type of sand did you use? Dry or "live Sand".

Let the system run it's course and if you don't have any traceable amounts of Ammonia, Nitrite or Nitrate after a few weeks, then add a fish.

The first picture looks like it may be a Bubble Tipped Anenome.

The other pictures look like Aptasia... a pest anenome.

Hi Daimyo,

I used Live Sand from instant ocean. Do you think the bubble tipped Anemone would survive in this new tank and without good light.

And is Aptasia dangerous to fish or corals. if yes how do i get rid of them?

The Anemone does need good light. Aptasia can harm the fish it will sting them and you as well, the best way I have found to get rid of them is peppermint shrimp.
