Clam disappeared?

I bought a blue maxima clam the other day, not a cheap adventure, and today it is completely gone. the shell is there, but all of the tissue is gone as if something ate it. Does anything actively go after clams or would anything else cause it to completely vanish?

I've had that happen to a small maxima.
I suspect something like a crab got hold of it and the rest of the clean up crew, bristleworms etc finished it off.

My theory is this is much more likely to happen to a weakened clam ie. transportation, incorrect water conditions, poor lighting etc.

Small clams are not very tough, buy as big as possible.

Something similar happened to me twice, both times the clams were small and in poor condition when I bought them (didn't know they were till after they were in my tank). Clean up crew made short work of them.
