Looks like cyno on top to me?
What do you have for flow? How much and what lighting are you using?

Makes sense, I'm fighting a slight cyno issue in the tank.

Maxi 400 in the sump along with tank drains in that part of the sump and phosban reactor with 600 maxi pumps in there. The light is a 60 watt arosun bulb for growing on 10 hours a day.

I took phosban out couple days ago and the new light was just added a week ago. I had an automotive flourecent work light on it before the new grow light.

Should I trim the red parts off the cheato along with light tan slim stuff?

Honestly I'm not sure if it will make a difference but it won't harm anything if you do trim. The cyno will most likely clear as you deal with it in your display tank.
IMO, some small cyno issues in the sump is not a big issue.

I get a lot of cyano growing on my chaeto too.

I'm trying to control the cyno but no luck. Any tips?

One thing that helps me is I rinse the chaeto off in some clean or old saltwater (in a container free of chemicals separate from the tank) until the chaeto appears to be free of the cyano. The biggest thing to control cyano is keeping nutrients low by things like water changes and siphoning up cyano.

Just turn the chaeto every two weeks and you will see that it is green on the other side. That way cyano will disappear. I do that with mine and it's always green.
