View Full Version : Turnover rate + cryptic zones + skimmers =?

Getting closer to my large tank build and I am piecing some concepts together.

Here is my question/concern.

Some school of thought is to have your turn over rate close to your skimmer pump rating. On top of this I plan on running a cryptic sump so I need slower flow anyhow. Looking at my current tank I can see the amount of detritus in the sump so I feel even though i am running a skimmer, there will still be some benefit plus I like how the chaeto is treated because right now I just hook some of the chaeto over a baffle to keep it on the surface.

With a SRO-3000int skimmer rated at 400gph and with those schools of thought my return rate would only be 2x if my tank is a 210g (volume will be less due to displacement and other factors).

This seems awfully low but if I have adequate water column suspension (which I hope to achieve with two vortech mp40s) and I have a 4ft weir box in my 6ft tank, most of the detritus should make its way to the sump to be processed by the skimmer and crytpic zone.

What other considerations should I be making? Did I provide enough information?

Is there perhaps a better place to post this to get some input?
