I have not seen either of these tanks in person yet.

I dont know what forum this belongs in but I have a question. There is a Rimless 180 Gal glass tank for sale She said that she started this project but had to move from a house to a apartment and its too big for her now. Says it holds water and does not flex. Here are the pics(the pics shows duct tape on the corners when they were moving to protect the corners ) It has 2 peieces of glass on the bottom. There is some chipping on the top rim on the side.
She is asking $280 and might be able to get it cheaper. What do you guys think?

If it were close to me I would be on the way to fill it with water and see what happens. If its all water tight I would go for it. Good luck with it make a build thread.

I wouldn't buy anything that hasn't been filled with water for a day or two. Then check for leaks and bowing.

I asked the same question on another popular reef forum and all the guys on there are saying stay away from it.....the 180 is about 1 hour from me and the 165 is local. I have a 50gal rimless glass and love it. Not too thrilled about the acrylic one because I'm sure being used it has scratches.

What are the dimentions, it only looks 18" wide which imo just isnt enough, plus the taller the tank the more lighting your going to need to run it which, at the end of the day could have been used to buy a new tank with the dimentions you actually want. I also wouldnt be happy with the chipping around the top rim. Honest opinion - keep looking.

Have you had a chance to test yet? Keep us posted and like the other member said, make a build thread! :) :)

No still have not seen it in person. Maybe Friday or Saturday. Just seeing if you guys thought it was worth it to go look at.

I would pass on the 180 for sure. Who built it? Do they know what they are doing? It also has cracks on the rim. No good IMO. Professionally built tanks fail, who knows what this one will do. Just not worth it, especially at that cost. You can get a new 180 for around $500-600 with a warranty. Or keep looking.

Where can you get a new rimless 180gal for $500-600?

I never said rimless. If you're going for rimless it probably has something to do with aesthetics, right? In that case the chips would be a deal breaker for me alone.

My 210 new, non-RR and trimmed, was $627. My 105 rimless RR was $450.

I have had 5 glass rimless tanks, a 240 acrylic and a 500 acrylic and wont go back to wood or plastic frames! lol.

I can understand that. My rimless is amazing. Wish I had more. I just wouldn't buy THAT one.

Im aware what size a standard 180 is, but to me that looks more like a 72x18x30

Agreed. I looked at the pic of this tank for about a nano second before I came to that decision. I've never trusted used "custom built"tanks that are empty...let alone chips and scratches. It looks more like a 150 than a 180.

That would mean it's 150 gallons, even for that it's a great price.

You're greatometer needs to be re-calibrated.

The overflows are freakishly small. I'm not liking the backyard lamination on the bottom. And the chipped rim. Almost makes me think they took the trim off a tank for a rimless look, it failed, and now they want to unload.

JMO, YMMV

I would agree it looks more 150ish; unless it's 30" tall, then maybe its 180.

I always, always, always try to get dimensions prior to going (I realize you asked) and take measurements of the tank when I'm there; if it's not already flat out obvious the tank is smaller than claimed. I can't even remember the number of times people tried to sell me tanks claiming they were a bigger volume than they were (craigslist). Especially when I was looking for 150+.

Just to add a bit more to the DONT BUY THE "180" convo, it really bugs me how they have that tank sitting on 2x4s in the pics. Add to that the fact they are using dollies to move it. Who uses dollies to move glass tanks? And also what is all that glass in the tank? Looks like a broken euro brace to me; maybe that's why the rim is chipped. On a serious note, the more I look at these pics the more reasons I see to not only avoid buying this tank, but to run away screaming from it.

I agree stay away from the "180" the braces in the bottom look like they used to be euro braces. If the tank is as deep as it looks the glass would have to be quite thick to support rimless with no bowing. I wouldn't trust it as it sits in the pictures. I also agree the two overflows are extremly small.

The second tank looks good but the stand does not look tall enough to properly accomadate a skimmer that would work for that size tank. That means you would need to build/buy another stand which adds to the cost and means you would be paying the price more a less for just the tank.

Just my .02
