Hi there,
I'm very interested about getting one of these guys but I'm a bit hesitant,

I dont run a uv and the last thing i need happening is an ich outbreak in my reef,

can anyone shed some light on this for me?

is it a matter of when it'll get it or have any of you guys had success keeping one without contracting ich,

I've done research and most say their candidates for contracting ich,

i just want some feed back from people that have kept yellow tangs,

all the best,Darren.

Hi, have mine over two years now. It had contrac ich in two ocassion, on both it has cure by it self. Cant say the same about others fish in the community. No medicine since I have a reef. I now have the same 8 fish for over a year, havent add more in fear of causing stress on the community and have a ich outbreak. No ick since. Happy with the way the tank is rigth now and I think a low bioload, so the tank always looks clean. The botom line is that if the fish gets stress, it will have a greater chance of getting ick. If the fish is healthy, eating well, and swiming well it can fight the ick parasite.

my two cents

If you QT properly you should not have any problems with ich. If you do not QT it is just a matter of when you get ich... or something else in your tank. Ive learned this lesson the hard way.

lol thanks for the tank build comment. yes it took a yr to gather everything little paycheck at a time.
good luck withe the Yellow tang. in my experience yellow tangs are not that bad its the blue, powder brown and others but all fish have the danger of getting ich.
please follow a good QT program and note new research shows 9 weeks of QT is must. i have successfully used cupramine for treating ich but there are other methods like hyposalinity and tank transfer as well.

It won't matter if you QT if you've already introduced ick into your main tank before, it can still get ick. By all means QT though. However, to answer your actual question about yellow tangs being ick magnets, in short the answer is all tangs are prone to ick. Some are worse then others though. Purple Tangs, Powder Blue, Powder Brown, and Hippos are the worse however. I my experience yellow tangs are generally hardy and fight off ick pretty well.

I would say one thing often looked over in QT a fish is their stress. Oftentimes right when you get a fish is the most stressful, and most likely time for them to develop ich. Keeping a calm, quiet, dark enviorment is fundamental to their succsess in the long term.
