what type of filtration are you running or planning to run? sump? HOB? good job on picking reef octopus skimmers since they are one of the best skimmers out there (IMO). what ever do go plus one with the skimmer's rating. so since you have a 45g tank i recommend a skimmer thats rated a little over your tank. for example i have a 90g tank with a 20g sump. so i run the reef octopus xs160 which is rated up to 160g works great for me. just dont get a skimmer thats over powered for your tank or it wont work efficiently.

I hve a aquaclear 70 but all im running in it right now is carbon and idk if i should run other stuff in it as well...so im guessing the reef octopus 100 will probably be good for me

+1 reef octopus - That's what I'm getting too. Have an AC 50 that I'm not using and thinking of making it a refugium. If you clean it often you can run the mechanical media too.

I run a Reef Octopus BH1000 along with a AC70 converted into a refugium. Heres a link to my tank if you need any ideas. http://reefcentral.com/forums/showthread.php?t=2136751&highlight=tree+sponge

You can do both but it's a very tight fit. Since you're doing a 45g tank I would recommend going with a AC110 which is the biggest model. Gives a lot more room for chaeto and carbon and such.
