Not sure about that. First in order for DNA to be useful they would have to have a record to compare to. So they have DNA charts from all over the world? Second, they could get the same info from the shell. Third, they are broadcast spawners. No telling where they land.

dr mac from pea told me that was the way customs checked to make sure the clams were legal, according to cites treaty. i had asked about the nicks in the mantle and that was the answer i received. had no reason to doubt the gentleman.

Sorry, but this is in no way true and I never made such a statement. Not interested in sidetracking the thread or making any argument about this nor to debate the issue only to set the record straight, but I have no clue how this rumor started and do not want my name attached. Now, folks....back to posting clam pics. As far as bite marks on clams, this is fairly common and as the clam recovers the bite grows back in a different color.

I was gonna say if you said that it would have been on your site as a disclaimer or something. Anyhow we all know who has the coolest clams here (hint: you) so do you have a pic of a favorite of yours?

Since I am a vendor here me posting pics of my "favorites" or otherwise is not allowed because it would be viewed as promotional. However, my favorite was the bicolor one we had a while back, that was really crazy, one side was blue and the other a completely diffent color. I had seen a photo of one but never actually saw one myself and then we got that one and proved it was real.

I just bought this beauty today. The clerk at the LFS said they had taken it on trade and wasn't for certain what type of clam it is. Looks like a Derasa to me.. I counted 5 ribs on the side of the shell, no scutes, and distinct tenticles on the incurrent siphon. It does look similar to a small Gigas with the blue dots on the mantle, but Gigas clams have smooth incurrent siphons. HTH

Thanks, maybe some day..

This system was started in a 14g Aquapod that was up for about 1.5 yrs. I transferred the contents of this 14g to this 34g in Oct '12. My avatar pic is from the 14g.

I moved 4 months ago and removed the sand bed (to move the tank) and never put it back in, so it is now BB.

Fourth, this is not even US Customs concern. I kind of know this for a fact. If any agency in the US would do this it would be Fish and Wildlife.

You are absolutely OFF BASE sir! After sequencing the DNA of EVERY clam imported, they insert a small GPS tracking device beneath the mantle. That way they can't track potential aquariums violating import regulations.
A crack team of highly trained, ex-special forces Custom Agents, know as the CPU (Clam Protection Unit) are tasked with performing random stings on marked premises containing clams. These professionals keep our country safe, as well as the oceans we love.

God bless them.

Thank you. Means a lot coming from someone with such a nice collection of their own. It is one of my favorites, just because I know what it is, but through the glass it is probably the worst looking of them all LOL. It is just a brownish color with black spots. Still really like it though and it is growing very well. Also if you stand close of the tank and look at it at a steep angle their true colors are more visible (all about angle really and not so much glass).

They are pretty. So unique.

Thanks. I try and find unique stuff for my tank, obviously.

tcmfish,
Would you mind post a FTS of your tank. I think you got some unique aqua-scape with all those tiles.
Nice clams

Sure.

There is the full tank shot. The squami is now on the right side though. After moving his way to the front I think an urchin moved him over there.

Unique is a nice way of saying it :spin3: but I know it doesn't look very nice now. I just like watching the coral and clams grow and this was a cheap easy way to do it. It doesn't take away from the coral and its different. It is also pretty easy to move things around which comes in handy quite frequently.
