Would putting a Fluval FX5 canister filter in a 55 gallon tank be too much for a tank that size? I was thinking if I can afford it why not use that over a Fluval 406. Does anyone have any thoughts on this?

I have the FX5 on a FW 120g. It is a great filter. I think it would be fine to put on a 55g. It holds about 4? gallons. But it has a LOT of sponges. You will need to clean it a LOT and it is a PITA to clean, trust me on that! I guess you could just fill it with live rock though and skip the sponges. It is a sweet filter.

It should be fine. I have one on a 125 Reef and I do battle NO3, but who doesn't. Clean often.
