My lfs had a frag of this stuff for $20. Does this need MH lights or will it grow under any lighting?

Need a pic. Do you know the species name of the coral?

My LFS has some of that stuff that has no problem growing under VHO's. With all the lights that are out there today, you shouldn't have any problems. This is a "fancy" algae though. Manicure it. GL.

Sorry, I don't know the species name. He just called it dragons breath.

I should have add the specs of my lights in my initial post. I have a skyled 48" fixture. These are the specs on it. Do you think this will work? I do have a xenia and some polyps that look to be doing great under these lights.

I think there's picture of that "red stuff" in this link. Maybe not though. That type of algae is sold as a frag around here, if you can find it....

I believe you are referring to Halymenia, or flame algae. Very beautiful macro algae! I used to have some in my display and some in my refugium. It grew great under T5s in the display and under spiral flourescent bulbs in the refugium. A LFS in the area has it growing great under halides. So in my experience it grows great under just about any lighting.

Thanks for the feedback. I think I will pick it up and give it a shot.

Dragons Breath is a macro Algae that is red with orange tips. It grows well once settled. I have mine in a refugium with an LED light over it.
It is very neat to look at. Much nicer than Cheato

Going to pick up the frag today and was wondering about acclimation. Do I need to drip acclimate until the pH and salinity match?

Yes its known as dragons breath, flame algae and dragons tongue. Will grow under any light but for the orange tips you need a more intense lighting.

I have mine growing in my fuge under a standard light bulb

I figured the orange tips were new growth, but my lfs had it under NO lighting, so the more intense lighting it's under now explains the orange tips. I am still debating moving some to my display tank, along with some sea grapes. Both look too nice to keep in the fuge.

Can't believe they charge 20 dollars for that little clump of dragons breath, I sell a hand full for $20 shipped on the fourm when ever I have extra. Might explain why it sells so fast.

Will a standard CUC of snails and hermits eat this stuff? Interested in getting some. Very pretty algae but don't want to give my CUC a $20 snack :)
