I stopped into my lfs today on my way home and they had just got in a shipment of fish. When I saw my friend that works there he said "follow me, you need to see this." As I followed him he asked me if I new anyone with a REAL big tank and I reluctantly said no. He then proceeded to tank me to the big tank that they hold their stingrays in and said to look in. As I looked in I almost couldn't believe what I saw....... it was a 3 foot shovelnose shark. We both just kinda stared at it for a while in awe and then I asked him "who the hell has a tank big enough for something like that" and he just shrugged his shoulders and said that they would need like a 1000 gallon tank to keep him happy. Anyways I took a few pics because I wanted to share them with everyone. So here they are.

I saved this one for last to try and show the size. These rays that are swimming around the shovelnose are around 12" round.

If they have no one to buy him, or don't know anyone with the proper size tank, why would they have him in there store??? Especially if they cant house them long term??? I know the answer, but id be kicked off of RC for given it straight... Sad really... Cool to share, but I'm guessing the outcome for this animal is bleak :(

I'm actually surprised that roger ordered it, but who knows maybe he knows someone who wants it. I can't imagine he would get something like that if he knew he would be sitting on it for the long-term.

I agree. Or to a person with way too much money that can afford a big enough tank

He should be sent back into the ocean, it's where he belongs. Either that or Mystic aquarium. I'm not in favor of housing such animals in captivity. Just my humble opinion.

I agree with you there. That guy will get way to big for almost any home aquarium. I just couldn't resist the photo opportunity.

No problem. There was a little yellow in the face and a light pink tail. All in all I think its pretty cool and my friend at the store says that those Australian banded ones you like have a super personality. He also said they were much better than the regular banded pipes.

Biomes in North Kingstown is building a new 8 ft by 16 ft tank for it's sharks, but I don't know if they would be interested. If you go there again, you can mention it. For those of you not familiar with Biomes, it is a marine center for kids to help them understand life in the ocean. It is very hands-on, and they host a lot of school field trips and birthday parties. You can pet the sharks in their shark tank. Don't know if the guy you saw wants to be petted. lol I agree with Pallobi and Billryan. It should have been left in the ocean.

Thanks I will mention it next time I stop in there. And I agree with all-night you guys that it should have been left in the ocean, I just could resist the photo op because I have never seen one of them other than on TV.

This shark sold today for aproximately 235.00 to a customer with a 180 tank. I hope this wasn't a novelty purchase. I agree, he belongs in an aquarium or back in the ocean.

WOW! A 180? Doesnt a shark need turn around room? I heard they can't see corners & if they hit it, they can get nosebleeds? They should be in an oval tank.....I don't know this for a fact, just what I have heard.
Deb, did you find the flame angel you were looking for?

It is true. When I went there today, I made a point to look in the ray tank, noticed the shark was gone. At checkout, the clerk was telling us how they sold the shark to the guy with a 180, knowing that it will outgrow the tank very soon.
No luck with the fish Bill.

Wow! That does suck for the shark. There is no way that shark will have room to turn around in a 180, even if its the only thing in the tank. I love that store but I am definitely a little disappoints that they sold it to someone knowing it going into a tank that small. I feel horrible for the shark.

Me too. I shop there too and kind of wish I didn't know. Maybe the buyer will make the right decision and bring it to an aquarium or make arrangements to release it. Unlikely I know.

Add another shop to the list of places I will never go to. Ridiculous that they even ordered something like that.

If you did the equivalent to some kind of mammal you'd be on the news or arrested.

Disgusting.

Don't judge them to harshly so soon. I know that they shouldn't have even bought the shark or sold it to someone with a much too small setup but can you name me a place that hasn't done that at one time or another? I have been shopping at Krystal Clear for over 5 years noe and this is the first time I have seen anything this extreme happen here. Usually they are very good about making sure that the setup is gonna be a good enough for the fish to thrive.

Been busy with unpacking getting things fixed up to my wifes liking. In my spare time been down in the basement in the tank room as jeanette calls. getting the 30 put back together and cycled and working on the 180 as money permits. Live aquaria was pretty cool. it is right in front of their main facility it is huge. they have an open house in august hopefully I can make it up to it. I had a list of things I wanted to lok at but it went out the window shortly after I walked in LOL. take it easy Bob
