Hey everyone, I have had freshwater tanks in the past but now I would like to try saltwater. I am in the planning stage and so far I only have a stand :lmao: that used to be for our old television. The only problem is its height as I was hoping to build a sump to go underneath. There is only a space of 23"L x 15"W x 13"H for the sump which I think will be a problem for a protein skimmer (height)? I am stumped and cannot think of anything I can do except alter the stand which will be difficult. Any ideas?

I believe smaller size skimmers (Like Bubble Magus) are between 10" and 13" in height, unless you want to build an all in one tank with a drop in unit "or" an external skimmer the stand is not going to work.
Most nano tanks out there are offered as combos and the furniture is usually under $ 100.00 when purchased as one, I would strongly recommend you to get the matching stand for your set up.
Best of luck.

Thanks for the reply, I actually think I have figured out a way to add on 3" to the height which should be enough room.

Next would be the sump build which I am completely new at doing. I have searched the web and read sites about sumps, but I was never able to fully understand them... :headwallblue: Does anyone know any threads or websites that give in-depth instructions and a list of materials needed to build a sump? Sorry if these questions have been asked a million times.

Before you go into the Sump... Please keep in mind the weight of the tank in relation to the stand (A Gallon of Saltwater weighs about 7 to 8 Lbs), then add about 20 more for rock and another 15 in equipment.

My dad has also talked me out of using the stand, instead I will be building/rebuilding a new one. I guess I was just in denial and trying to save some money for other equipment. :spin2: What do you think the minimum height the stand could be to fit a sump underneath it? Sorry if these are stupid questions :hmm3:

It all comes down to the tank size you have in mind, but most stands are in the 30" height range (Is probably the most appropriate for space and visibility). Keep in mind there will be other equipment stuffed inside it...
Is better to ask as many questions as you may have this way you don't make the usual mistakes we all made building our first tank.
Best of luck
